Highly Responsive

We would give 10 stars if we could! Our college kid has been enjoying Ascent Autism’s online peer group with Nicole for one full year now and we have noticed significant growth in social skills and self-confidence. Our family highly recommends this life-changing safe space for emotional support, peer skill-building, and practicing friendship dynamics. Thank you Nicole and Ascent Autism!!

Founding Story

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, Ascent Autism was founded by Hye Ryeon Lee, PhD to tackle the biggest challenges individuals on the spectrum face. Individuals with autism have unique life experiences that can make it challenging to connect with members of their local community. Ascent offers individuals with autism the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers to socialize, learn, and laugh with one another.

Frequently Asked Questions

We match 5 to 7 peers with autism and neurotypical peers into a peer group that meets once a week to socialize around topics of mutual interest to all of the peer group members. Peer group matches are made across the following areas: strengths, challenges, interests, age, and personality traits.

Ascent's social skills group therapy is a subscription service. All of our subscriptions are automatically charged on a recurring basis. Peer group sessions are $99 per session and 1:1 sessions are $100 per session. There are no contracts and you can cancel anytime.

If you’re interested in understanding the non-verbal experience, we recommend watching The Reason I Jump. If you’re looking for a movie that can help your child understand their emotions, many neurodiverse families love Inside Out. Check out our autism-friendly movie guide here.

For both a scientific and personal look at autism, we recommend reading But You Don’t Look Autistic At All by Bianca Toeps. Check out our full book guide for more great reads.

Hero Elementary is great for the young ones. Songs for Littles is excellent for toddlers learning how to talk. And Ranking of Kings is a great option for anime and fantasy fans. See our full list of the best TV shows about autism and inclusion.

Here are a few alternative options to consider:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT helps by identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. It's useful for those dealing with social anxiety or difficulties. CBT addresses cognitive patterns and provides strategies to manage social challenges.
  • Group therapy: Group therapy offers a supportive space where individuals can practice social skills. They can feedback from peers and a therapist. It allows interaction with others who understand and learn from each other.
  • Play-based interventions: Play therapy or play-based interventions work well for younger children or those who learn through experiences. Play activities target specific social skills like turn-taking and problem-solving in a safe and engaging setting.

Even if a provider offers parent training, it may look different from one provider to another. For example, an in-home provider might conduct a parent training session directly following a therapy session with your child to help explain what they’ve been working on with your child. At larger organizations, you might have a support group of families who are dealing with similar issues.
