About YMCA of Austin - COA/NORTH AUSTIN Y

Since 2013, the City of Austin/YMCA North Austin Community Recreation Center, or North Austin Y, has served as a hub of health and wellness for area residents and organizations. Kids and teens stay safe while keeping active in sports and games in the gym or Teen Center. Residents of all ages make productive use of the Computer Lab. Project SAFE teaches area first-graders to swim for free. And the North Austin Community Garden is helping forge a connection between the earth and the food we eat.

The facilities are clean and the staff are friendly. They have a lap pool which is a bit on the warmer side as far as lap pools are concerned but thats not a problem for me. A nice hot tub to unwind in after and even a little exercise pool. Clean showers which have curtains so they can be private and also a swim suit dryer Clean locker rooms and a nice gym on the second floor. They have a lot of machines and also programs to sign up for if you want guidance. Id definitely recommend this YMCA to anyone I know

We attempted the Ys new Everline Counseling program for my son and it was a disaster. The counselor was ableist and economically discriminatory.I wrote thoroughly in the intake forms that we sought counseling about a bullying experience at the beginning of this year where the school principal gaslit my son and falsely accused him. Despite my son gaining the courage to speak at a board meeting this administrator continued to abuse her power and mistreat other students. My son felt as though doing the right thing only causes suffering. He had a horrible year starting in a new school and we realized that for years he had not been receiving accommodations for dysgraphia a neurological learning disability that he should have been. He is twice gifted and very misunderstood. Instead of helping him with or even mentioning ANY of these huge problems we sought counseling about the counselor nitpicked about our parenting choices particularly obsessed with the problem that our family shares one bathroom because the other shower does not work. She repeatedly chastised us that this needs to change. She also did not like that I read to my children in my bed because our room should not be a common room even though I told her repetitively that I have a disability and painful joints and we all had loved this shared time where we could sit and snuggle up together before bed. I should note that the counselor is not a parent was very inexperienced and was very inappropriate in her condescending and patronizing statements. Kristen the head of Everline counseling has not returned our money and has not returned my emails. I wrote to John Mitchell on March 25. It is April 3 and he still has not acknowledged my letter or returned the email. We are not just at odds with their recommendations. The counseling service was in denial about the actual traumatic situations that brought us to counseling and their services should be scrutinized before they gaslight other clients make more ableist remarks and cause more damage.

The administative team at YMCA Rundberg is some of the worst and most incompetent I have ever dealt with in my life. This all started when I tried to cancel my membership back in December. I went to the front desk in person told the person working behind the desk that Id like to cancel my membership. They said Sure. No problem. I dont remember the exact conversation but he basically asked me a couple question about my account then said Great. Youre all set. You should not get charged in January.Come January I got charged. When I called them to see why the person who answered said they could see that there was a note on my account that I had requested the cancellation but for some reason no record of the date I made the request. They have an at least 10-day cancellation requirement. Im pretty sure I made the request more than 10 days before my renewal but since both they and I didnt have record of that interaction I said fine.Come February I got charged again.I called again to see why and the person who answered said they see that I had made the request but dont know why Im getting charged and they cant do anything about it. They forwarded my call to an administrator named Britney so that she may possibly help me resolve this. She didnt answer so I left a message with my name and number asking for a call back which I never got. I also reached out to my bank to reverse that charge in hopes that that may encourage the YMCA to terminate my membership. I did at least get my money back for February thru my bank and they said the case was closed. I figured that might be it.Come Friday March 1st I get charged again. Once again I call the front desk to ask why. They say all the same things as before but no solution. They forward me to Britney again and this time she answers. I tell her my name and my issue and she says Oh yeah I got your message when you called last month which she never called me back for BTW. She asked me a bunch of questions and by the end of the conversation she says that she is going to start the process to refund me the March charge and that she will email me a receipt of that request by end of day Friday.I never received the email so I called back Saturday to ask about it. The person who answered the phone said Britney wasnt there and that she wouldnt be back til a week from that following Monday. So Monday March 11th. I call on March 11th and they say that Britney is not there and that she wont be there til Thursday. I called today Thursday March 14 and they said shes not there and wont be back til next Monday March 18.Hmm. You be the judge.

I love our Y. From the staff to the other members it always feels like a welcoming communal space. I greatly appreciate that the members bring such a wide range of diversity to the location and it truly feels like a reflection of the neighborhood. With regards to the space itself I like having both a pool and basketball court accessible in addition to the more common fitness machines and free weights. I personally dont attend classes but they always seem to be well-attended and lively. Its hard to beat the value of a membership at the Y.

Horrible gym hours and there is no point in having a family membership here. The bottom floor you dont need a membership for and upstairs cant be used by kids. They wont let my 11yr olds play basketball while I workout and watch them from above. They change the rules weekly and you cant use the group studio rooms.Ill stick to the other locations.Update 052024I just noticed there is a red message on my screen when I sign in about reminding me a year later that my kids cant use the basketball court without me being on the court. Cancelled my membership on the spot. Added picture to show me watching my kid play ball.

I havent been to the North Austin YMCA in about three years. I remember actually applying to an executive employment opportunity at the location and I stopped through to see about a course offering back then.Yesterday I decided to pass through. As soon you walk through the entrance theres a customer service desk so YMCA members can scan themselves in and patrons can be assisted by the front desk clerks. Theyre eager to assist as soon as they see you. In fact I received a free day pass and was told the next time I visit I would pay the customary 15 for a day pass. One of the first things I noticed is that the lobby floor is shiny and everything looks really clean. Patrons were steadily coming in with work out gear and parents were escorting their children here and there. This was around 6PM and the parking lot had about 50-60 cars or maybe more. This tells me the community is satisfied with the services provided by the location and both of my experiences were welcoming. Before leaving I actually browsed over a bunch of fliers on a table highlighting course offerings for children and adults.Theres not much going on in regards to community building taking place in North Austin. Its good to see the YMCA organization in the area and doing a great job. Stop on through if youre in the neighborhood or visiting.austintxreviews ymcareviews communitycenter theroneshellman theroneshellmanmedia atx

Honestly has almost everything you would need pool gym two squat racks kettlebells bikes basketball cable machine etc. They have made regular improvements. Its clean and it doesnt get crowded. This is enough reason to join if youre getting student or young adult pricing. I also did an adult swim class and that was great. The location is very convenient for me.The only thing they dont have is a sauna. They are closed on Sundays. The locker room can smell funky. Need some mid-weight kettlebells. And the atmosphere can be lacking e.g. no music. But overall its very good.

Smaller and not as much weight equipment as other Ys but everything there is in good shape. No sauna steam room but a good pool and hot tub. Inconvenient that its closed on Sundays. Frequently waiting for equipment at peak hours. Always friendly staff.
