Step 1: Intake

We work with your child’s physician to understand the nature of their diagnosis, and determine if the Ujala team is capable of providing treatment. We carefully consider your child’s medical history and other conditions which may have an impact on the behavioral health plan.

Step 2: Assessment

We perform an assessment of your child’s verbal, life-skills and behavioral capabilities to place them in the correct cohort and determine their care-plan.

Step 3: Assignment and Care-Plan

Based on the results of the assessment, we will assign your child to a room with specialized staff and similar peers, and develop a care-plan specially tailored to their needs.

Step 4: Parent Involvement

Our care-plans include parent training, which will involve parents working with our BCBAs at a minimum of once a month. We also conduct regular parent meetings and provide progress reports. Guided social support groups with other parents of ASD children are also facilitated at our center.

Step 5: Play Groups

We recognize that play skills and fun are crucial alongside traditional therapy. We facilitate guided play sessions with neurotypical volunteers and siblings of ASD clients for holistic developmental experience.

Here are a few alternative options to consider:

• Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT helps by identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. It's useful for those dealing with social anxiety or difficulties. CBT addresses cognitive patterns and provides strategies to manage social challenges.
• Group therapy: Group therapy offers a supportive space where individuals can practice social skills. They can feedback from peers and a therapist. It allows interaction with others who understand and learn from each other.
• Play-based interventions: Play therapy or play-based interventions work well for younger children or those who learn through experiences. Play activities target specific social skills like turn-taking and problem-solving in a safe and engaging setting.

Even if a provider offers parent training, it may look different from one provider to another. For example, an in-home provider might conduct a parent training session directly following a therapy session with your child to help explain what they’ve been working on with your child. At larger organizations, you might have a support group of families who are dealing with similar issues.

The main role of developmental-behavioral pediatricians is to evaluate kids who aren’t developing, learning or behaving the way their peers are. You might be referred to one after an evaluation through school or from your state-run early intervention program. 

These specialists can help you understand certain behaviors you’re seeing and come up with a diagnosis.
