We were very excited to get an appointment here the tools layout were great they seemed to have a lot of different areas for play gym games etc.The waiting room in my opinion was poorly maintained and uncomfortable. My daughter 3 was being treated for autism related feeding and sensory issues. Towards the end of her sessions with Lauren she was presented with meatballs. My daughter has never eaten meat before and this had not been discussed with me prior. I could hear her say CLEAN IT UP my daughter yelling and crying. She brought my daughter out of the therapy room she had vomit in her hair and on her clothes and shoes. I was told what happened.I asked to talk with the Director Natalie who did not seem concerned. I was told that they take different approaches from commonly known therapies and combine them with their own style to best fit the childs needs and that this has been practiced for 20 years. Had this been discussed prior I would have asked more questions. In response to your reply My concerns have not been addressed we still have not been referred to another facility. We were very hopeful this would be a great fit as the facility itself has a lot to offer. Its really saddening to me how my daughter was treated. In my opinion this incident has caused my daughter myself great distress. I was asked to remove my review as well.
My son has been going here for 10 years and will continue to. The 10 years in itself says how well its working for him. He has made tremendous improvements in each and every category that the staff has worked with him. He has done OT PT and feeding therapy here. They work on social skills as well. Every child is different with needs and personality and at Therasens the staff is trained to adhere to these special needs.I wouldnt trust anyone other than Therasens staff. Natalie is an amazing director and her team is skilled in their profession.I read a few reviews here and in my 10 years of consistent interaction and therapies I have never had 1 bad experience. They bring out the best in every child work from their heart and are always open to listening parents concerns.
My son was seen here for OT and PT over the course of a year and a half. He made great progress the therapists were friendly he was challenged pushed and stretched through regular sessions in a way that allowed him to develop and grow while he had fun The breadth of knowledge and their ability to evaluate and communicate about my concerns as a parent reassured me and sent me into other doctors appointments more knowledgeable and ready to ask the right questions or push for the right services. Thank you for a wonderful experience for my baby and me
I cant say enough positive things about Therasens. Our daughter has attended Therasens two to three times per week for six years now how time flies. She started first with Natalie for about a year or two then with Lauren and all of our experiences have been wonderful. My daughter absolutely adores Lauren and is disappointed if we ever have to cancel our appointment They have always gone above and beyond for us including getting us in touch with some of the best specialists in the country. I wouldnt trust anyone else with our girl
update to responseI appreciate the response however I must inform you no payment plan was ever discussed. I hate to throw someone under the bus but the employees notes are a flat out lie. I did however request copies of the billing information since I received ZERO bills and offered to come by that day to retrieve them. The lady I spoke with said she would email them to me instead but never did.I used Thersens for my daughter back in 2018. I was contacted over a year after we had discontinued service as they said they were auditing their accounts and saw I had a large balance. Im talking like over a thousand dollars. Not sure what happened but I am livid as I always pay my bills at time of visit and was completely caught off guard by such a large bill. I should add I still have yet to receive anything in writing it has only been verbal phone notification on two separate occasions now. Im assuming their staff never billed my insurance and thus told me I had no deductible and once it was finally submitted they realized I should have been paying a deductible and patient portion all along. This is completely unacceptable. The second representative claimed my insurance took a very long time to pay and so they were unaware I owed a balance- sounds almost convincing except I know how well my insurance is about paying claims timely and I have never had an issue anywhere else. I do however see a pattern based on reviews of Therasens for doing this to other patients. Now it is almost 2022 and I just received a second phone call threatening to send me to collections. Out of principle I will not pay this bill even though I have excellent credit I will be disputing it as soon as I am notified of anything in writing. We loved Gemma which is why I continued to use her even though towards the end of treatment it really did not seem necessary. Had I known we were being charged 60 a visit I would not have continued service as long as we did.
Natalie Sanders owner and occupational therapist accommodated me during her lunch hour to evaluate me and provide me ultrasound therapy for my finger. She was wonderful and friendly.
The service was alright -this was my first experience so dont have much to compare it to- my complain is with the lack of knowledge on which topics are acceptable to talk about while in session. The All Lives Matter argument isnt a topic of conversation with clients especially the colored folk So there you have it it could be plain ignorance but I sure didnt feel safe there
We started our journey with our son here with Natalie. Now have moved and had to go other places. I knew when we were there is was an amazing place but once we tried getting care in another state didnt realize how truly amazing it was. Not only was the facility very knowledge in all aspects but willing to do whatever needed to be done to help my son. We didnt feel like another patient but my son was cared for in such a special way. Since he was so young I went back with him and could not only see what special care and resources they had but all the therapies were so amazing with every patient even when a parent wasnt present. They truly want to do all they can for their patients. I dont understand when I see poor reviews on them because in all aspects billing rescheduling patient care and knowledge they try to help people Ive personally seen it while waiting to go in or waiting to talk in the office. When we left I cried because my son had come such a long way and had struggled and I was so happy with where he had come in all the time we were with this office. Also I have an older child who had to come sometimes and they were so nice to accommodate him as well which made my job as a mom so much easier. I couldnt recommend any other place more
The therapists are great however the business sidefront of the house is very unorganized with a lot of turnover with the front desk. We ended up leaving because my sons therapist was not consistent and several appts were canceled by them once literally when we were on our way there. Ive been to a great PT place and this was far from. Luckily there were two therapists that I thought were great unfortunately once they started having my kids see whoever was available the therapy was no longer consistent nor effective.
After posting my review I was contacted by the owner of Therasens Natalie who was unaware of our issues and very helpful in pausing the bill until insurance resolves the issue. I highly recommend contacting Natalie directly should you have any issues with billing as she was understanding and helpfulPrevious update 6 months after the initial issue with their billing department after being assured that they would call me if there were any issues with the insurance not paying I received ANOTHER bill and handwritten note with NO PHONE CALL OR NOTICE.Dont go here. Their billing and scheduling staff is atrocious. I am BEYOND Frustrated with this office and their horrible communication and customer service.Review from 6 months ago My son went to see Gemma for OT from August through November of 2017 though she kept saying his issues that could be helped were minor muscle tension. We really enjoyed Gemma but our experience with EVERYTHING else about Therasens was lacking.Appointment booking was a nightmare front desk was always someone new who didnt know how to work the system appointments were frequently canceled or changed billing is a nightmare we were always reminded that they would charge us if we missed an appointment which we never did but were never paid when they canceled on us with less than 24 hour notice so their policies are hypocritical. With all of that said they have a new billingreception person who is auditing their patient files. This is both wonderful and awful as we just today learned that the bill from August 18th 2017 that I was FIRST sent a bill for from Therasense in December of 2017 and though I handled by calling my insurance to review authorization on December 5th 2017 has still not been handled as of February 8th 2018.I was threatened that if we did not pay soon that we would be sent to collections thought I received NO notice of this bill going unpaid after the FIRST bill I received in December and let them know that the insurance should cover it. Our insurance left them a message today letting them know that the claim is under review and should be paid. If they send me to collections I will be very upset as they have not done their due diligence in even providing statements or billing in a timely manner.I would stay far far away from this place due to their ineptitude for scheduling and billing BUT they are the only pediatric OT within 50 miles. I very much hope their office can get their act together as Gemma is lovely.Still I will personally go elsewhere even if it means driving over an hour should my son need any further OT services.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a few alternative options to consider:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT helps by identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. It's useful for those dealing with social anxiety or difficulties. CBT addresses cognitive patterns and provides strategies to manage social challenges.
- Group therapy: Group therapy offers a supportive space where individuals can practice social skills. They can feedback from peers and a therapist. It allows interaction with others who understand and learn from each other.
- Play-based interventions: Play therapy or play-based interventions work well for younger children or those who learn through experiences. Play activities target specific social skills like turn-taking and problem-solving in a safe and engaging setting.
The occupational therapy process includes an OT evaluation before care starts. Here are the four steps your family can expect when starting occupational therapy:
- Complete OT evaluation. An occupational therapist first identifies your child’s strengths and needs through a thorough OT evaluation, also known as an OT assessment or screening. You’ll answer questions about your child’s skills, and your child will most likely demonstrate their skills via hands-on activities with the therapist. Evaluations can last 30 minutes to a few hours.
- Approve OT plan. The therapist develops a care plan with individualized goals and customized interventions based on your child’s needs. You can also share any specific goals or concerns before approving the OT plan.
- Start therapy sessions. The therapist works directly with your child and your family, using various strategies and exercises to systematically improve areas of limitations and to build upon a child’s strengths. Some exercises your child might participate in are animal walks, obstacle courses, and therapy swing activities. Your family may learn strategies for supporting your child’s individualized needs at home, such as ways of supporting emotional regulation and sensory processing. The therapist may also recommend tools and techniques to use at home, in the community, or in the classroom to help your child succeed.
- Monitor your child’s progress. Parents and caregivers can expect ongoing progress monitoring and communication to ensure the child is achieving their short and long-term goals.
Occupational therapy can also be provided virtually via telemedicine. Virtual therapy is a great option for families in rural areas who may not have access to in-person services, or for families who prefer to have therapy in their child’s home.
Virtual OT allows the opportunity for increased caregiver participation and understanding of a child’s strengths, areas of improvement, and generalization of skills in the child’s home environment. Virtual therapy also provides increased opportunities for caregiver and family education to support the child and the family based on each family’s needs.
Once you find a quality physical therapist you want to work with, here are a few things you need to know:
- There will be an evaluation. First, you can expect an assessment to identify your child’s areas of strength and needs. A physical therapy evaluation usually lasts 30 minutes.
- You’ll review and approve the care plan. The physical therapist will create a care plan, also known as a plan of care (POC), outlining the goals and strategies. They will review this with you and your care team before moving forward with therapy sessions.
- Physical therapy sessions will be fun. PT with children is designed to be enjoyable. The therapist will use strategies and exercises based on your child’s needs. Exercises might involve playing on large stability balls, obstacle courses, movement equipment, stretches, and other hands-on activities.
- Expect home exercises. Physical therapists commonly assign exercises to work on at home. Doing these exercises with your child outside therapy sessions can improve your child’s overall progress.
Yes! Most providers offer physical therapy in their offices or a clinical setting, but many are offering at-home options. Virtual options have become more popular in recent years. You might facilitate care with the guidance of the physical therapist.
Pediatric physical therapy is considered safe and should not hurt. Autistic children spend their time in PT moving and exploring their environment. If you are concerned about your child experiencing pain during certain exercises, especially if they may struggle to communicate and advocate for modifications, speak with their physical therapist about your concerns.
