About The Awakenings Project

The Awakenings Project serves a distinctive population. Only a handful of organizations other than The Awakenings Project curate art shows of this kind at national or even local venues. Moreover, there exists only a few literary magazines, other than The Awakenings Review, that are committed as we are to editors, artists, writers and poets with mental illnesses. Poignantly, among scores of celebrated artists, writers and musicians there exists a positive relationship between mental illness and creativity. The Awakenings Project does not purport to be a breeding ground for artistic prodigies, but we have found there is a widespread interest in the arts among our artists.

This place is a great place to go Irene oneill who runs the Awakenings project is awesome at helping people with the stigma of mental illness and learning disabilities too bring back their creativity and speak about their experiences through ART. Sadly the Elgin Art Studio which is located upstairs and has empty shelves 4 art displays should be more mindful of community participation and when their shelves are empty should offer to put some of the Awakenings project up there
