Founding Story
Dr. Judy Mantle is the dean of National University’s School of Education (SOE). Her ties to National University go back to 1984 when she first joined the University as an adjunct faculty member, eventually serving as full-time faculty and department chair for 12 years. She chaired the Department of Reading and Specialized Education Programs, which eventually grew to become known as Special Programs and encompassed special education, educational technology, school counseling, and school psychology. In addition to program development, Dr. Mantle also contributed to the development of National’s academic infrastructure including faculty policies, bylaws, and Graduate Council policies.
In addition to her National University experience and accomplishments, Dr. Mantle has been a lecturer at San Diego State University and held full-time faculty appointments at Central Missouri State University and the University of San Diego (USD). In 2001, she assumed the Deforest L. Strunk Endowed Chair in Special Education at USD and was later appointed chair of that school’s Department of Teaching and Learning. She helped lead USD’s Special Education Program to national accreditation from the Council for Exceptional Children, a distinction earned by only two California universities.
