About Speech By The Bay

website

At Speech By The Bay we believe in the power of connection over compliance. We understand that each child is unique and has their own set of strengths and abilities. We strive to meet your child where they are and provide therapy that is meaningful and applicable to their individual needs. Our strengths-based approach focuses on building on the skills your child already has, rather than trying to "fix" what is “broken.” We are dedicated to helping your child reach their full potential.

Founding Story

After graduating from UMASS Amherst (for both my Bachelor's of Science and Master's of Arts in communication disorders) I have worked for over five years as a pediatric speech language pathologist in private practices, acute care, pediatric outpatient clinics, schools and in early intervention settings. I have experience supervising clinical fellows and SLP assistants, as well as supervising graduate student clinicians at California State University, East Bay. I have advanced clinical training in SOS, DIR Floortime, and Project ImPACT. I designed Speech By The Bay in 2023 in order to provide neurodiverse affirming, holistic, and strengths-based services to clients in the bay area. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my nieces and nephews, traveling, cooking, hiking, and exploring the California coast!

Frequently Asked Questions

The goal of speech therapy is to help your child communicate effectively with other people across all environments. This may take the form of using gestures, simple signs, verbal speech, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

Some other common things speech therapists can help with:

  • Nonverbal skills, such as signs or gestures
  • Forming speech in a clearer way
  • Communicating thoughts and feelings clearly
  • Understanding and responding to questions
  • Discerning facial expressions and their corresponding emotions
  • Noticing and understanding body language
  • Feeding and swallowing
  • Stuttering

Your doctor may recommend feeding therapy to help your child with their negative feelings and behaviors towards food. Feeding therapy can be a part of your existing speech and language, behavior, or occupational therapy. For example, a speech and language pathologist (SLPs) can help with chewing and swallowing related issues and an occupational therapist (OT) can help with fine motor skills related to eating. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a type of behavior therapy that will aim to improve behaviors with mealtimes and increase dietary variety and decrease unwanted behaviors such as food refusal.
