Stay away stay away stay awayIf you want a medical gun held to your head go to this place. If you want to be force to wear a machine without any explanation of why but you might find it beneficial go to this place if you want completely no say in your health and the way you feel go to this place. You are a paycheck you are a number you are nothing. This place should be shut down. Salem sleep medicine is so much better. They will tell you everything and the professionalism will leave you speechless compared to to this worthless place.
Always a quick and easy appointment. Never had a single problem here.Staff is friendly and helpful. The negative reviewers likely have a negative review for every thing they do.
So I like most people had to wait awhile when I was a new patient. In my experience it was worth it. Doctor Skylar helped me immensely and we worked on a plan that would work for me. I really like that I can call him if I am struggling on the plan and get advice. The nurses and scheduling folks have always been pleasant too. Although I always ensure I am punctual. If you are ever on the fence about if treatment for sleep issues can help I assure you they do.
Doctor and staff are amazing. I started off as a parent of a patient then a parent of a second patient and became a patient myself as I saw the positive life altering change after the proper sleep disorders were diagnosed. The staff are personable and easy to talk to. Everyone is great about getting questions answered - even if you have to call back for an after thought question. Sleep diagnosis can be a smidge lengthy - but I have witnessed and experienced why. They are wonderful about seeing you as a person and seeing your life to help get you diagnosed as quickly and efficiently as available - but corners are not cut to make sure there is accuracy I wish more general practitioners parents teachers etc. even had a smidge more updated knowledge. I have enjoyed the educational updates to what I previously thought I knew about sleep sleep hygiene and sleep disorders. The Salem Health Sleep Center has been life altering in amazing and positive ways that I cannot say enough positive things about them
The staff are not helpful. I drove over a half hour to get to my appointment. I was 10 minutes late due to a car accident that prevented us from getting through. The staff told me they I would have to reschedule. I came here today hoping to get some answers and not just perscribed drugs like the last time I was here. Im extremely unsatisfied with the service and the facility as a whole. I hope they go through a serious renovation to be able to serve patients adequately.
Incredibly happy to have been referred here. I work in a medical setting so I feel that I can be overly critical when I go to my own medical appointments. I first received a call from this office after being referred by my primary the woman I spoke with on the phone set very clear expectations on what documents to expect in the mail and explained what my first appointment would be for. I received the documents very quickly and also included were additional instructions to help set expectation for the appointment and a map of the hospital to help direct me to the office. When I showed up for my appointment both receptionists were incredibly friendly and professional. I watched and experienced them stopping their conversations as patients walked in the door to help them immediately. I was taken back for measurements by a very kind MA who introduced herself and set very clear expectations for the appointment. After my measurements she asked a few clarifying questions and then excused herself to notify the doctor that I was ready. Dr. Schuyler came in and also introduced himself said hed be okay being called by his first name and then clarified what I was there for and then let me know what my time with him would look like. I received an additional referral from Dr. Schuyler that I had been practically begging from my primary physician for over a year. He asked if there were additional support or concerns I had. He explained the next steps in my care handed me tissues because I was getting emotional and told that my MA would be back in with educational materials and to schedule my next appointments. After scheduling my appointments she explained what the process would be like and eased several concerns and listened to my worries. The MA excused herself from the room to staple documents for me and was very clear about where to meet her in the hallway for said documents. As I was leaving Dr. Schuyler came by and thanked me again for coming in.The staffs compassion did not come off as forced or fake it felt like everyone was genuinely happy to be in that setting.I may have over explained the process in this review but I was incredibly pleased with my experience. Pay no mind to the negative reviews
I have had a few bad experiences with this department of the Salem Hospital. A few years ago I attempted to have a sleep study done as it has been suspected that I have sleep apnea. After the doctor ordered a take home sleep test the staff was not able to get me the sleep test equipment. Due to a series of family problems I was not able to reschedule a time to get the equipment until it was past due time.I had my second appointment today a few years later after my sleep problems have become too big to ignore anymore. The front staff were bare minimally friendly in person but are borderline rude over the phone. When I scheduled my appointment via cell they told me that they were going to send me information and a medical survey via mail. This never arrived so I went in early figuring that I might be able to fill in whatever forms they were supposed to send me then. Not only had they not sent the forms which the older front desk lady said had bounced for some reason she said that I was scheduled for March 1st instead of today March 29th. The only problem with that being that I hadnt even called them until about the 7th and I hadnt even received a refferal from my GP until the 3rd. So for some reason I was either lied to my face or someone had made a very basic mistake.None of this would be as big of a deal to me if it wasnt for having to deal with staff who acted as if I was a waste of their time. I wouldnt be surprised if I was charged a no-show fee for their mistakes.
Dont listen to the negative reviews. Dr. Schuyler and staff are flat out excellent on a number of levels. Attentive flexible and at the end of the day professional. I tried to work with an unnamed commercial sleep center before going to see Dr. Schuyler and the experience was terrible a sales first approach vs assistance approach. My 2 cents.
The staff was very knowledgeable effeciant and went above and beyond to help my husband. We were on a tight time schedule but the staff called with reports and got the cpap ordered in a timely matter. Thank you Dr. Noud for being so understanding and adjusting the process so we could leave on time.
I was surprised to read the negative reviews. I called to set up my initial appointment a few months ago and had no problem speaking to a receptionist. They scheduled my first appointment with Dr. Thye Schuyler and my encounter with him was very positive. He was friendly accessible and answered all my questions. I was then scheduled for an overnight sleep study which I will do tonight. Everyone so far has been very helpful and easy to reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
When you visit a neurologist, they’ll assess your child’s needs, run some tests (think imaging or EEG), and diagnose. From there, they’ll create a customized treatment plan. Medication, lifestyle tweaks, or maybe even a referral to another specialist could be on the table.
There unfortunately isn’t one test for all neurodevelopmental conditions. Most likely you will go into a visit to test one or two medical conditions. If you are looking for a comprehensive autism evaluation, developmental pediatricians, psychologists, or neuropsychologists are the preferred specialists who can diagnose autism.
No, neurologists focus mainly on non-surgical interventions. If your child needs surgery, neurologists might point you in the direction of a pediatric neurosurgeon.
More research is needed to understand the link between sleep disturbance and autism, but there are a few possible reasons why autistic children have difficulty sleeping.2
- Co-occurring conditions. Coexisting medical conditions like ADHD, anxiety, or sleep apnea (when you stop breathing multiple times throughout the night), environmental allergies, and gastrointestinal upset (like constipation), can negatively impact sleep.
- Sensory sensitivities. Sensitivity to lights, sounds, and touch (think textures of blankets and clothing) can disrupt sleep.
- Medications. Often autistic children are prescribed medications to address various concerns like hyperactivity, anxiety, or aggression. Many of these medications may contribute to sleep problems. Adderall, Focalin, and Vyvanse are examples of stimulants prescribed to children on the spectrum to treat hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention, that can cause insomnia. Abilify and Risperdal (medications commonly prescribed for autistic children who have severe irritability, aggression, and/or self-injurious behaviors) may cause some children to become very sleepy. However, each person responds differently to medications. (Pro tip: Keep channels of communication open with your doctor so that you can find the best medication to help your child that least affects sleep.)
- Neurobiological differences. Some research suggests autistic people may not produce the same levels of neurotransmitters (such as serotonin) or hormones (melatonin) important for sleep regulation, and may also experience disruption in circadian rhythms.3 In addition, low muscle tone can contribute to sleep-breathing disorders, such as sleep apnea, which also affects the quality of sleep and can lead to increased inattentive and hyperactive symptoms during the day. These behaviors, in turn, make it more challenging for the child to participate in therapies and activities.
For more information, read our comprehensive sleep guide.
Like anyone else, when children on the spectrum don’t get adequate sleep, they may find it difficult to self-regulate during the day. But there’s another consequence – autistic kids who don’t get enough sleep can experience an increase in stimming, irritability, inattention, difficulty socializing, and keeping up in school.3 They may also face challenges with increased hyperactivity and lack of impulse control. In short, lack of sleep can intensify your child’s existing challenges.
The same goes for parents, too. It’s hard for you to keep your cool and be fully present when you aren’t well-rested.5 As you’ve already found out, good sleep is crucial for everyone in the home.
Speak with your doctor if you have concerns – especially if you notice your child snores or gasps in their sleep, grinds their teeth (bruxism), sleeps with their mouth open/drools, or is very sweaty during sleep, as these are potential signs of sleep apnea. It can be helpful to keep a log of concerns, including when the child falls asleep, how many times they wake up, when they wake for the day, and any unusual behaviors (e.g., an unusual number of sleep terrors, recurrent nightmares, sleepwalking, sleep talking, unusual hand movements, lip-smacking).
Research shows that pediatricians are sometimes unaware of the severity of sleep issues in autistic children, so please continue to advocate for your child if you have concerns.
