Founding Story

East Bay Child Development Center was founded as a small speech therapy practice in San Leandro when the COVID pandemic began.

Today, we've grown into the East Bay's premiere child development center, providing comprehensive therapeutic and family support services to our community.

My fifteen years of experience as a pediatric speech language pathologist Oakland Unified School District and Kaiser Permanente have given me a well-rounded perspective on supporting children's communication through functional, educational, and health-based approaches. The staff at East Bay CDC shares my commitment to serving families from all backgrounds, with expertise in bilingual and multicultural therapy and family advocacy.

Having served as a faculty member in the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Department at California State University, East Bay, I recognize the importance of providing training opportunities for future professionals. Our center welcomes student interns and volunteers who are training to become speech-language pathologists, early interventionists, and early childhood educators.

At East Bay CDC, our multidisciplinary team works closely with each family to create thoughtful treatment plans that include direct intervention, home programs, and parent coaching tailored to your child's needs.

We look forward to meeting you and your family!

Frequently Asked Questions

A formal ASD diagnosis, or a medical diagnosis, helps you get the support your family needs, especially within the context of accessing medically necessary therapies and services.

  • Insurance Coverage for Therapies: Medically necessary therapies for ASD are often covered by insurance including, but not limited to, speech therapy, ABA therapy, and occupational therapy.
  • Financial Support: A diagnosis is required when applying for social security or disability benefits.
  • Plan for Care: A diagnosis helps identify your child’s support needs. For example, your child might need to develop social communication and self-regulation skills.
  • Future Research: The more data we gather through evaluations, the more we can improve services for autistic children and adults.

Check out Autism Diagnosis: The Complete Guide for Parents for more information.

1 in 36 children is diagnosed with autism according to the latest reports.

Here are some reasons why:

  • Medical professionals understand autism better. More doctors are trained to test for autism and other developmental and language delays.
  • The definition of autism has evolved in recent years which means that an autism diagnosis covers more conditions to help more people get the services they need.

For more information check out Common autism diagnosis questions: Answers from Dr. Melanie Hsu

Yes, but there is room for improvement. We don’t have a single, perfect diagnostic tool for autism and there are a lot of factors that contribute to an accurate diagnosis. There are a few “gold standards” that are used for diagnosis.

The goal of speech therapy is to help your child communicate effectively with other people across all environments. This may take the form of using gestures, simple signs, verbal speech, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

Some other common things speech therapists can help with:

  • Nonverbal skills, such as signs or gestures
  • Forming speech in a clearer way
  • Communicating thoughts and feelings clearly
  • Understanding and responding to questions
  • Discerning facial expressions and their corresponding emotions
  • Noticing and understanding body language
  • Feeding and swallowing
  • Stuttering

“Early Intervention” might be the provider’s way of describing services that they provide to babies or young children. However, it might also indicate that the provider is a vendor for your state’s publicly funded program. This means the services with this provider might be covered by your state!

The first step in accessing these free services from your state is to get an evaluation. The evaluation will help the state determine what services your child qualifies for, if any. You can find your state’s local EI program by clicking here.

When you contact your local center, say “I have concerns about my child’s development and I would like to have my child evaluated to find out if they are eligible for early intervention services.” They will ask screening questions and arrange for an evaluation, which is provided for free.

This happens. The results of the school’s evaluation may be different than your child’s medical diagnosis. It’s also important to remember that school is NOT the final say on your child’s potential. They may offer very little support to your child, underestimate their abilities, or disagree with you on what support your child needs. You will probably need to advocate for the services and support you believe your child needs.

Most children go to daycare before they enter preschool at age 3 or 4. Most children stop daycare at the age of 6 when they go to school. Children who are homeschooled might continue daycare programs. Kids diagnosed with autism or other developmental disabilities might be in both daycare and therapy programs longer. Special needs programs and centers help children up to 26 years old.
