For over a year now my 3-year-old autistic twins have been coming to Orange County Speech for occupational therapy. One is an extreme picky eater with some motor delays. He has been with miss Hollie from the start and we LOVE her. He has made so much progress. The other is a picky eater but also has a ton of sensory needs. Miss Mary is his occupational therapist and has come up with all kinds of creative strategies to get the wiggles out and maybe eat a vegetable. This year they both started physical therapy with Kim and Dana. There is no doubt that the big gym is the highlight of their week. Last month the boys started speech with CJ and Dana. We have found all of the therapists and staff to be very professional and so very kind and caring with our boys. They go above and beyond every day.

My five year old daughter has been going to OC Speech Services for over two years and my 22 month old daughter also attends sessions. We have utilized both physical and occupational therapy services for both girls. For occupational therapy Taylor did the initial assessment and has continued to be fantastic helping my 5 year old with everything from handwriting fine motor skills to emotional regulation. Hollie and Emily have been amazing with OT for feeding with my youngest and keeping my busy five year old engaged in her sessions. For physical therapy we are so grateful to Kim for helping my oldest with balance stairs and navigating challenging obstacle courses and she gets major credit for working little one starting at 3 months of age. I am so amazed my 5 year was able to get to the normal range for her physical therapy goals. Sherilyn had been terrific keeping both my children engaged with the most amazing activities for physical therapy. I wish I was as creative as she is. Betsy has been great with insurance. Though we have not used speech therapy the whole office knows us and is friendly to the girls. Thanks HannahWe very much appreciate Orange County Speech Services for all the work they do. My girls have made so much progress in daily life due to the whole team. Its a great place to go if you think your child needs therapy services.

My organization has partnered with OC Speech since 2016 and I have worked with the owner Elizabeth and her staff closely over the years. We have had consistency with the therapists who provide excellent support in working with children on their specific speech goals. The therapists are collaborative with my team and always go above and beyond for the families. Since the pandemic they have shifted to seeing our students virtually but have continued to make great progress with them which I have been impressed with.I am so pleased with the partnership that we have had with OC Speech and grateful for the team of therapists that Elizabeth has put together.

OC Speech Services has been nothing but rewarding and provides our son with the tools and services needed to succeed.Ms. Christine Daffer has been accommodating to our ever-changing schedules due to Covid-19 with our sons school schedule and my work schedule. The speech services provided by OC Speech Services and Ms. Daffer are the most attentive and caring individuals you could meet. We have seen a dramatic improvement from our son with his speech from the beginning of his services to now thanks to Ms. Daffer.I disagree with the user review regarding Ms. Taylor as our son also had her for OT. She was attentive caring and and provided all the services needed for my sons success. The assessments were in line with our expectations and provided a path for our sons growth and success.Thank you all to the instructors at OC Speech Services will definitely recommend to parents whos child needs services.

I cannot overstate how fortunate I feel in finding this facility. Taylor Sheldrick Kimberly Iacobazzi and Hannah Blair are amazing therapists. My children have seen marked improvements in their abilities since they began to receive services at OCSS. Taylor Kimberly and Hannah are truly knowledgeable in their respective fields. They have shown my children so much patience and care. They identify areas of concern even areas I hadnt noticed myself and communicate why its important to address those deficits and how we can assist our children at home.Anyone searching for quality services for their children should contact OCSS.

Frequently Asked Questions
Speech therapy is almost always recommended for autistic children since many people with autism have difficulty with social communication. Even if a child is very verbal and says a lot of words, they might need to work on communication skills like:
responding to questions
starting or ending conversation
changing conversation topics
using gestures like pointing
understanding other people's body language
Speech therapy is a big focus in early intervention for autistic children and is usually the starting place for recently diagnosed kids. There is a critical period in the brain for language development and so, it's really important to teach language and communication skills as early as possible, especially if there are any delays in that area. Your child will learn effective ways to communicate which will help them grow into more independent and confident individuals.
It might be obvious when a child struggles with speaking —they are very quiet, say only a few words, or don't speak at all.
Spot speech and language delays like a doctor here.
The goal of speech therapy is to help your child communicate effectively with other people across all environments. This may take the form of using gestures, simple signs, verbal speech, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
Some other common things speech therapists can help with:
Nonverbal skills, such as signs or gestures
Forming speech in a clearer way
Communicating thoughts and feelings clearly
Understanding and responding to questions
Discerning facial expressions and their corresponding emotions
Noticing and understanding body language
Feeding and swallowing
Stuttering
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy rooted in the science of learning and behavior. Using principles of ABA, children and adults can learn to improve their communication skills, social skills, and daily living skills while also addressing problematic or challenging behaviors. The primary goal of ABA therapy is to teach helpful skills that promote independence and reduce harmful behaviors. Here's our complete guide to everything you need to know about ABA therapy.
It's a big decision to make for your family! Applied behavior analysis (ABA) seeks to improve communication skills, introduce productive habits, and reduce harmful behaviors. Watch out for ABA providers who look to "cure" autism.
High quality ABA therapy does exist where the goal is not to “fix” children, make them appear “less autistic”, or change who they are. The goal is to help people learn all that they can so they can live to their potential while embracing their unique, individual personality traits. Here's our complete guide to start and end ABA therapy.
ABA is usually covered by insurance if you have an autism diagnosis. Autism is typically the only diagnosis insurance will authorize for ABA services since its benefits have been researched extensively.
Always check with your specific insurance plan to confirm that ABA is covered for your child’s diagnoses and that the provider you are seeking care at is in-network. Here's our complete guide to everything you need to know about ABA therapy.
Here are a few alternative options to consider:
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT helps by identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. It's useful for those dealing with social anxiety or difficulties. CBT addresses cognitive patterns and provides strategies to manage social challenges.
Group therapy: Group therapy offers a supportive space where individuals can practice social skills. They can feedback from peers and a therapist. It allows interaction with others who understand and learn from each other.
Play-based interventions: Play therapy or play-based interventions work well for younger children or those who learn through experiences. Play activities target specific social skills like turn-taking and problem-solving in a safe and engaging setting.
The occupational therapy process includes an OT evaluation before care starts. Here are the four steps your family can expect when starting occupational therapy:
Complete OT evaluation. An occupational therapist first identifies your child’s strengths and needs through a thorough OT evaluation, also known as an OT assessment or screening. You’ll answer questions about your child’s skills, and your child will most likely demonstrate their skills via hands-on activities with the therapist. Evaluations can last 30 minutes to a few hours.
Approve OT plan. The therapist develops a care plan with individualized goals and customized interventions based on your child’s needs. You can also share any specific goals or concerns before approving the OT plan.
Start therapy sessions. The therapist works directly with your child and your family, using various strategies and exercises to systematically improve areas of limitations and to build upon a child’s strengths. Some exercises your child might participate in are animal walks, obstacle courses, and therapy swing activities. Your family may learn strategies for supporting your child’s individualized needs at home, such as ways of supporting emotional regulation and sensory processing. The therapist may also recommend tools and techniques to use at home, in the community, or in the classroom to help your child succeed.
Monitor your child’s progress. Parents and caregivers can expect ongoing progress monitoring and communication to ensure the child is achieving their short and long-term goals.
Occupational therapy can also be provided virtually via telemedicine. Virtual therapy is a great option for families in rural areas who may not have access to in-person services, or for families who prefer to have therapy in their child’s home.
Virtual OT allows the opportunity for increased caregiver participation and understanding of a child’s strengths, areas of improvement, and generalization of skills in the child’s home environment. Virtual therapy also provides increased opportunities for caregiver and family education to support the child and the family based on each family’s needs.
