Came to NBMC after a major accident. Dr. Hawthorne was amazing and gave me the care I neededdeserved. However SAIF requires that PAs cannot treat patients after 6 weeks so I transferred my care to Dr. Williams. While Dr. Williams did submit referrals I requested he also signed paperwork that said I was healed and back to 100 even though none of my referrals ended up going through. I left numerous voice-mails and came to his office numerous times but none of these calls were returned. His signature on those papers cost me the ability to continue seeking care under SAIF even though I never saw any of the specialists that he referred me to. I even heard that members of the staff sign for the doctors without reading the papers and knowing how they affect their patients. I am still dealing with the after effects of my accident over a year later.Secondly I could hear people from this practice talking about my condition at a local business which made me feel like my privacy with my doctor wasnt a concern.Overall I would have gone with a different doctor even if it meant driving away from the coast if I wouldve gotten better care.
I Had a very bad experience at this this place I wish I could give it a zero star. But I cant. I had a very bad experience with one of the doctors MA her hame is Ashley Tovar she was so rude to us over the phone when we asked why one of our family members medication was denied she said you need to come in if your they want them refilled . We told her why do we need to come in every time we need a refill ect . While we were talking to her she hung up on us . She sure does have bad people skills .
Told me 150 for an office visit over the phone and then again in person. Ok fine I have no insurance so I paid the full 150 up front at the time of my visit. Week later I get a bill for 174 with zero explanation for the additional charges. It was a standard 15 minute office visit. How rude to charge patients more than originally stated and not even provide a reason for the charges. I would not return to this office due to deceitful billing practices. Somehow 10 a minute for the services of a PA is not enough for these people.
I cannot understand the bad reviews. I guess to each their own I have always had a good experience with the front desk staff. Derral Hawthorne PA has always acted in a caring and professional manner. I have to thank him for the time he takes to listen and understand what my needs are
My experience with Tamara Tuttle PA was awesome. 1st visit I found her Personable Profesional Kind Understanding. So far I am Very Happy
Ive never had such a terrible experiences with a doctors office. I made an FAA medical appointment drove an hour to get to the office only to be turned back and canceled on. Went back a second time and was canceled on again I have driven three times to the office spent 6 hours on the road. On the third trip had terrible weather conditions landslide lost hours of work to make those three appointments and still spent 180 for the visit. What I know we live in a rural area but this is NOT HOW WE TREAT PATIENTS Who waits for the last minute to check to see if the FAA account is locked Dr. Should have had access Day before. Who waits till the last minute to cancel an appointment Say they called and actually never makes that contact to cancel No just no Go to another doctor for the FAA medical. Dr. Williams was a kind man. Just upset to have all this happen
Not sure why these reviews are so horrible. My son has been seeing Dr. Hawthorne for over two years and he is absolutely amazing and caring. He makes my son feel comfortable and its an enjoyable experience for him. Hes a great doctor
Not only did they fail to complete a referral to one of their own doctors but they lied to me to get me to schedule more appointments while I did not have insurance they said they could charge my new insurance and everything would be fine. Now they sent me to collections over their lies. I was supposed to see dr Taylor but he decided to take off early and not tell his patients... I sat in the waiting room over an hour past my scheduled time before they let me know. I wish I had something good to say here but theyre full of piss here.
North Bend Medical Center in Gold Beach is by far the worst medical clinic I have ever dealt with. Back in May of 2017 I went to the clinic experiencing loss of energy irritability anxiety and a multitude of other symptoms. They ran tests to check my thyroid and liver functions and when those came back normal they diagnosed me as depressed and prescribed antidepressants without running any further tests. Trusting they knew what they were talking about I began taking the medications. After a week of being on them I felt 10 times worse. I REPEATEDLY called the clinic to tell them but I NEVER once received a call back. I decided to go to Medford to a specialist to see if they could run further tests. The specialist in Medford needed a referral from North Bend in order to see me. I called North Bend several times again trying to get a referral and once again I NEVER received a call back. I was forced to pay that bill strictly out of pocket. Still seeking answers for the symptoms I was experiencing a friend recommended I see a hormone specialist. I found one in Medford and luckily they were able to diagnose me as having severe hormonal imbalance NOT depression. My 2nd visit to the hormone specialist and they stated they needed a referral from my primary doctor. For 2 weeks I called North Bend Medical Clinic at least once a day if not twice a day. I actually spoke to a nurse several times and she promised me she would fax over the referral. I called my hormone dr a week later and they still hadnt received the referral. When I called North Bend I was informed that the dr and nurse were out on vacation for a week and there was nothing they could do. When I FINALLY got ahold of the nurse I was given the excuse as they were unable to locate my hormone specialist even though I had given them the name both phone and fax number and the address. I was also told that I would have to prove that there wasnt a hormone specialist in my area. So instead of my insurance covering my visits to the hormone specialist I am now being forced to pay completely out of pocket. I have never been so frustrated with a medical clinic before in my life. The lack of professionalism dumbfounds me. I will happily go out of the area for everything. If you care at all about your health I would suggest finding another clinic.
The waiting times are long and the minutes with the physician physically present are short. Some times workers decide to just go home and not even call to inform you your appointment has been canceled. Often their computer system is down and they claim to call you to reschedule within a few hours but may actually call a week later. The front desk will handle complaints in a professional manner but I rather doubt any are communicated with the rest of staff. Ive only been there 4 times but it was never a quality experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Your pediatrician might be able to administer screenings, but most general doctors are not trained to formally diagnose autism. They might refer you to a qualified diagnostic clinician which include:
- Developmental Pediatricians
- Child Psychologists
- Child Psychiatrists
- Pediatric Neurologists
- Pediatric Neuropsychologists
Your experience might look different depending on the type of clinician you choose. Many families prefer working with developmental pediatricians. Others might work with a psychiatrist or another specialist to get a different perspective.
A formal ASD diagnosis, or a medical diagnosis, helps you get the support your family needs, especially within the context of accessing medically necessary therapies and services.
- Insurance Coverage for Therapies: Medically necessary therapies for ASD are often covered by insurance including, but not limited to, speech therapy, ABA therapy, and occupational therapy.
- Financial Support: A diagnosis is required when applying for social security or disability benefits.
- Plan for Care: A diagnosis helps identify your child’s support needs. For example, your child might need to develop social communication and self-regulation skills.
- Future Research: The more data we gather through evaluations, the more we can improve services for autistic children and adults.
Check out Autism Diagnosis: The Complete Guide for Parents for more information.
The occupational therapy process includes an OT evaluation before care starts. Here are the four steps your family can expect when starting occupational therapy:
- Complete OT evaluation. An occupational therapist first identifies your child’s strengths and needs through a thorough OT evaluation, also known as an OT assessment or screening. You’ll answer questions about your child’s skills, and your child will most likely demonstrate their skills via hands-on activities with the therapist. Evaluations can last 30 minutes to a few hours.
- Approve OT plan. The therapist develops a care plan with individualized goals and customized interventions based on your child’s needs. You can also share any specific goals or concerns before approving the OT plan.
- Start therapy sessions. The therapist works directly with your child and your family, using various strategies and exercises to systematically improve areas of limitations and to build upon a child’s strengths. Some exercises your child might participate in are animal walks, obstacle courses, and therapy swing activities. Your family may learn strategies for supporting your child’s individualized needs at home, such as ways of supporting emotional regulation and sensory processing. The therapist may also recommend tools and techniques to use at home, in the community, or in the classroom to help your child succeed.
- Monitor your child’s progress. Parents and caregivers can expect ongoing progress monitoring and communication to ensure the child is achieving their short and long-term goals.
Occupational therapy can also be provided virtually via telemedicine. Virtual therapy is a great option for families in rural areas who may not have access to in-person services, or for families who prefer to have therapy in their child’s home.
Virtual OT allows the opportunity for increased caregiver participation and understanding of a child’s strengths, areas of improvement, and generalization of skills in the child’s home environment. Virtual therapy also provides increased opportunities for caregiver and family education to support the child and the family based on each family’s needs.
Once you find a quality physical therapist you want to work with, here are a few things you need to know:
- There will be an evaluation. First, you can expect an assessment to identify your child’s areas of strength and needs. A physical therapy evaluation usually lasts 30 minutes.
- You’ll review and approve the care plan. The physical therapist will create a care plan, also known as a plan of care (POC), outlining the goals and strategies. They will review this with you and your care team before moving forward with therapy sessions.
- Physical therapy sessions will be fun. PT with children is designed to be enjoyable. The therapist will use strategies and exercises based on your child’s needs. Exercises might involve playing on large stability balls, obstacle courses, movement equipment, stretches, and other hands-on activities.
- Expect home exercises. Physical therapists commonly assign exercises to work on at home. Doing these exercises with your child outside therapy sessions can improve your child’s overall progress.
Yes! Most providers offer physical therapy in their offices or a clinical setting, but many are offering at-home options. Virtual options have become more popular in recent years. You might facilitate care with the guidance of the physical therapist.
Pediatric physical therapy is considered safe and should not hurt. Autistic children spend their time in PT moving and exploring their environment. If you are concerned about your child experiencing pain during certain exercises, especially if they may struggle to communicate and advocate for modifications, speak with their physical therapist about your concerns.
