My child has level three Autism and HIE mild brain damage from birth and is low verbal he sees a speech therapist who referred him because he mouth breathes during their sessions she noted and at night falls asleep with mouth wide open with slight snoring when he falls asleep on me sometimes. So she wanted him to be seen to make sure that there werent any issues affecting how he breathes at nightduring the day because it could possibly make a speech delay worse per her experience. Dr Sprecher was very dismissive and made me feel ignorant for asking questions about mouth breathing when I was referred for that very reasoni wasnt able to even show the pictures I wanted to. I also mentioned my sons fear of Drs. to him but when looking in my sons ears he said oh stop that doesnt hurt as my sons whole body is red and hes screaming. Of course if doesnt hurt but he has a fear of Drs. And he has AUTISM hes sensitive to touch and doesnt like people he doesnt know. I completely understand a child not cooperating is frustrating but if you work with children I expect you to know how to work with all sorts of children. The bed side manner was just awful in my opinion I hope Dr. Sprecher will do research on Autism spectrum disorder and start being mindful on how he talks to his 2 year old patients and watch his facial expressions when a mother is explaining why shes bringing her child in even if the information she was given isnt accurate per his experience all you have to do is say that educate them and not belittle them.

Friendly staff all the way from beginning with a very friendly nice man that gave us a ride to the building from our car check in person was friendly and very informative nurse that took us back and stayed with us the while time was super friendly and welcoming. Dr came in and got the job done within a minute. Very friendly and so nice. 1 thing that mattered to my family is that they assured my son they wasnt going to hurt him they didnt and they got the job done. Thank you Nemours

If I could give this place ZERO STARS I WOULD.I have never seen such incompetent staff in my life. As someone who also works in the medical field this place is embarrassing. I took a younger sibling in for a serious issue an I have nurses flirting with the doctor an doctor flirting back in front of us do your business in private not in front of your patients an disregarding our issue. Barley giving us a solution or answering our concerns had very rude attitudes. Left without any answers to any of my questions an then telling me nothing the staff is a laughing joke no professionalism. Glad we found a practice that actually cares an has responded an took our matters seriously an they caught things these people could not with my younger sibling. Disappointing.

We had the best experience with Dr. Noe. She was super down to earth and took her time to address all of our concerns. Dr. Noe even showed me on the xrays where the healing has occurred between visits. The xray team was fabulous We were in and out with stickers in no time. The Fish swimming on the wall were a super fun distraction from the big machines for my 3 year old. I highly recommend going to this location. Clean location with friendly knowledgeable staff.

Nemours has been excellent every time we have gone I didnt know you could make x-rays fun They got us in quickly even tho we were a walk-in for imaging they made my son so comfortable it was so cool how they had a projector of fish on the wall of the x-ray room They know how to make a not-so-fun experience enjoyable for kids

I would try somewhere else first. We made an appointment upfront with our insurance information and asked what the costs would be. The 148 we thought we were paying turned into an extra bill for 847 2 weeks later. I understand insurance but since we were using new insurance we asked upfront what the cost would be and we were given bad information. We could have gone anywhere for the service. Even though we provided everything upfront and set an appointment we were still given bad information and unapologetic customer service rep after multiple calls trying to reach billing made a bad experience worse.

600 for a plastic removable wrist brace. thats standard cost Whos setting the standards They didnt give us the price of the brace up front or any other options. Only to charge us at the next office visit. normally insurance covers it Hello youre still charging 600. Do you realize somebody has to pay for it. Do you really have the patients best interest in mind

My daughter recently had to undergo allergy testing for penicillin and the RN administering the test was horrendous. As a healthcare provider myself I was appalled by the lack of empathy exhibited. The RN never communicated what to expect and at one point of the three hour ordeal even appeared frustrated with my screaming toddler. The RN required assistance to hold my screaming child down and was laughing with her cohort about incorrectly starting the movie the movie ended halfway through appointment and was never restarted for my upset daughter and ended up sticking her an extra four times more than the required 6 sticks on the arm.My daughter was sooo upset she passed out from the pain in my arms. After the test the RN just left. No comfort or concern was exhibited. My daughter never even received a baindaid for her multiple bleeding site nothing of comfort was provided. As a pediatric clinic I was astounded and saddened by the experience. We will no longer be going to Nemours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Speech therapy is almost always recommended for autistic children since many people with autism have difficulty with social communication. Even if a child is very verbal and says a lot of words, they might need to work on communication skills like:
responding to questions
starting or ending conversation
changing conversation topics
using gestures like pointing
understanding other people's body language
Speech therapy is a big focus in early intervention for autistic children and is usually the starting place for recently diagnosed kids. There is a critical period in the brain for language development and so, it's really important to teach language and communication skills as early as possible, especially if there are any delays in that area. Your child will learn effective ways to communicate which will help them grow into more independent and confident individuals.
It might be obvious when a child struggles with speaking —they are very quiet, say only a few words, or don't speak at all.
Spot speech and language delays like a doctor here.
The goal of speech therapy is to help your child communicate effectively with other people across all environments. This may take the form of using gestures, simple signs, verbal speech, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
Some other common things speech therapists can help with:
Nonverbal skills, such as signs or gestures
Forming speech in a clearer way
Communicating thoughts and feelings clearly
Understanding and responding to questions
Discerning facial expressions and their corresponding emotions
Noticing and understanding body language
Feeding and swallowing
Stuttering
Your pediatrician might be able to administer screenings, but most general doctors are not trained to formally diagnose autism. They might refer you to a qualified diagnostic clinician which include:
Developmental Pediatricians
Child Psychologists
Child Psychiatrists
Pediatric Neurologists
Pediatric Neuropsychologists
Your experience might look different depending on the type of clinician you choose. Many families prefer working with developmental pediatricians. Others might work with a psychiatrist or another specialist to get a different perspective.
A formal ASD diagnosis, or a medical diagnosis, helps you get the support your family needs, especially within the context of accessing medically necessary therapies and services.
Insurance Coverage for Therapies: Medically necessary therapies for ASD are often covered by insurance including, but not limited to, speech therapy, ABA therapy, and occupational therapy.
Financial Support: A diagnosis is required when applying for social security or disability benefits.
Plan for Care: A diagnosis helps identify your child’s support needs. For example, your child might need to develop social communication and self-regulation skills.
Future Research: The more data we gather through evaluations, the more we can improve services for autistic children and adults.
Get involved with local organizations, support groups, and professionals specializing in those hard of hearing. They can offer guidance, resources, and opportunities for your kiddo’s development. The more you know, the better you can support your child.
Here are some suggestions to get you started:
Hands & Voices is a parent-driven, nonprofit organization that provides unbiased support, regarding communication methodology and technology, to families with deaf or hard of hearing children.
Gallaudet University — Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center is a federally funded institution offering exemplary academic programs to deaf/HoH students. They provide early intervention services, sign language classes, and uniquely designed resources for deaf/HoH communities.
Hearing Loss Association of America is a nonprofit organization with a mission to open the world of communication to people with hearing loss by providing information, education, support, and advocacy.
