Introduction
Hi, I’m Melissa Higashi, a pediatric speech-language pathologist based in Calabasas. My primary experience is with children in the elementary school setting, but I work with children of all ages. I am passionate about helping them build meaningful communication skills while having fun along the way - connecting and communicating should be an enjoyable experience! My approach is play-based and strengths-focused, meeting each child where they are and building on what they do best. I have experience supporting early communication, speech sound development, language skills, social communication, and AAC. I believe communication is a powerful tool for connection, and I love partnering with families to help children thrive with confidence.
What words would you use to describe yourself?
Kind
Collaborative
Inquisitive
If I had to choose three words to describe myself, they would be kind, collaborative, and effective. Kindness is at the heart of how I connect with children and families, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and understood. Collaboration is essential to my work, and I enjoy partnering closely with parents, caregivers, teachers, and other professionals to help children reach their goals. I’m also naturally inquisitive, always seeking to better understand each child’s unique strengths and needs while using evidence-based practices, individualized strategies, and engaging therapy activities that make learning meaningful, motivating, and successful for each child.
Who are you best positioned to serve?
I am best positioned to serve children of all ages who need support with early communication, speech sound disorders, receptive and expressive language development, social communication, or AAC. Families who value a play-based, strengths-focused approach and want to be active partners in the therapy process tend to be a great fit. I love helping children discover their strengths, build confidence, and develop meaningful communication skills.
