About Joy & Laughter Developmental Therapy - San Jose
JLD Therapy began in 2012 to fix a troubling trend in therapy that we saw every day at other practices: lack of communication between staff and limited options for parents. Too often, the healthcare system seemed broken, unable to help people, suffering from too much bureaucratic red-tape and outdated rules. We knew that there must be a better way, one that would empower therapists, parents, and children to work together to reach the highest outcomes.

I vividly recall finding JLD Therapy during a panicked Mom Google search one afternoon. I am so thankful that I did From the minute Marcos answered the phone I knew that we were in the right place. I have been so incredibly impressed with JLD. Even more importantly the therapists that my son has received services from are true angels. By far 3 individuals that will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Feeding Therapy was the service that we were in need of most as this is not funded by our county. Our therapist was Jennifer Lewis and there will never be enough words to thoroughly describe how much she changed our feeding situation for my son for me and our entire family. Jennifer was so patient during our initial intake as I had my son his three siblings with us. She was calm kind and just genuinely present. This was the first time she had met us and it felt as though we knew her for YEARS because she was immediately invested and determined to help me help my son. From that point on she was quick to answer my questions via email and each week when we had our sessions she not only worked with my son she helped me as a Mom know what to do to help my son. She quickly became part of our team and she was his advocate. Nowadays that is hard to find. She wrote letters to his medical providers and was always willing to do what ever she could to help my son. My son graduated from JLD Therapy Feeding Therapy in December 2024. Jennifer sent the sweetest certificate it brought tears to my eyes. What really did it for me is what she did last week. A random day I open our mailbox and find a letter addressed to my son. I was a bit taken back at first and thought oh maybe it is a marketing piece and it was in fact not. Jennifer sent us a handwritten card and a sticker she found on Etsy that is offers words of encouragement for the type of genetic disorder that my son has. She didnt have to do this yet she did. My son is no longer her client we are no longer paying JLD Therapy for Feeding Therapy and yet here she went doing something so far above and beyond what she needed to do for my son. Still brings tears to my eyes now.All that to say if you are looking for therapy services for your child I would HIGHLY recommend JLD Therapy. Professionals and even more importantly just incredibly kind and genuine humans who CARE about their patients and LOVE what they are doing. Two things we could use a little more of nowadays Thank you Jennifer You will forever hold a special place in our hearts.I also would like to say that my sons other two therapists were equally as incredible and truly the best He had Stacey for PT and Elise for OT. Again two true angels who were SO amazing and just a joy to work with. Stacey is one of the best PTs my son has ever had. So present so knowledgable and the best cheerleader for my son. You knew each week that she genuinely cared and wanted him to succeed. Elise was also such a pleasure to work with. Another incredibly kind person who was so great for my son and so knowledgable about all things OT.I might be JLD Therapys biggest fan ha As a Mom and unfortunately nowadays healthcare is not always the best and people often times just do not care. When it comes to your child you want someone in your corner ready to do all they can to help you help your baby. This was my experience with JLD Therapy and I am so grateful to know that such a company is in our community ready to serve and support kiddos and parents too
I am very satisfied with these therapist I highly recommend them because the focus on helping the children and the therapist are professionals and they have a lot of patience. My son has had a lot of progress.
This is my experience its been 2 ocassions where the theraphy change drastically from one day to another without a prior notice or verbal agreement.Once it was with Mr.sam where he retested my child for services of occupational theraphy before that my child had 2 o.t sessions done the same day so I wouldnt be back and forth and after the tests where done Mr.sam said it was no longer needed for my child to have the 2 30mn sessions so it was reduced to 45 mn but zita said that he had recommended 2 times sessions each containing 30mn equal to 1 hour per week. She offered me a new one since there was an opening I didnt understand why my son was moved from the schedule he had already just out of the no where and no explanation that actually made sense I understand theres other children in need but this is why there was a waitlist for everyone and its really unfair when the company asks us to come on time or they charge us for being late or when the teacher is off and we have to make it up or when he have to tell with time if they will be absent from theraphy but for the teacher to be out for the day without us being adviced is also unfair . I tried out the theraphy with miss Ashley so now he was seeing Mr.sam and miss Ashley each 30 mn .and 2 week after seeing miss Ashely dir mentioned if my child was able to move up his session I was like no this is why you asked me what time worked because it was available and thats the time it works for us since my child has aba theraphy after long story short they informed me since he was just a 30mn session miss Ashley wouldnt be able to see him anymore again there we go switching my child from bt to bt and when I ask to make a grievance report they give me the run around .This is really unprofessional from the company because every company has someone to respond to someone who is there when theres a problem and this isnt the case no show of empathy .
My son has been receiving both speech and occupational therapy since he turned 2 years old he is now 5 years old. We absolutely LOVE Ms. Elise who provides OT for my son. I love her gently approach with my son. She is very knowledgeable and shares feedback after every session. I appreciate her recommendations of how we can help my son both at school and at home. Since starting therapy with her a few months back with Ms. Elise I have witnessed how much my son has improved his skills.
I saw Jennifer Lewis for infant feeding occupational therapy and she was a shining light during a difficult time. I tried everything to figure out why my 2 month old couldnt eat more than 2-3oz at a time. Walked into Jennifers office and she instantly could tell what was going on. She is so knowledgeable and was so sweet with my baby. After one appointment and doing at home exercises with my daughter which she loved by the way there was already improvement. After her second appointment she was pretty much eating normally. I am so grateful to have found Jennifer and have relief knowing I have such a fantastic resource to reach out to should any other issues come up. From the front desk staff to working with Jennifer and the other friendly staff members there I cant recommend this place enough.
This review is for our feeding therapist Jennifer Lewis. We were first recommended by my sons pediatrician at PAMF to look into Joy and Laughter Developmental Therapy in San Jose when our in network options were not available until 4-6 months out from the time we needed these services. I can say now after 4 months of taking my 18 month old to Jennifer I would pay out of pocket all over again to have him receive the care and expertise we have from her. We came here at a time when my son refused to eat any solids at 14 months old. Every attempt to feed him was extremely challenging. This is our third child so we thought we had things down pretty well but he didnt follow the normal milestones when it came to eating. Numerous allergies added to our equation. Jennifer gave me a sense of relief and the confidence to know that my son was going to learn and be able to eat one day. She has so many creative ways to help these little kiddos become interested in food and eventually want to eat. Jennifer is so kind and patient and her compassion is palpable. Ive seen my son go from barely eating a bite of food to now consuming full meals. And ENJOYING it. Jennifer has become part of our familys story. We are forever grateful for everything she has taught us these last couple of months and the care she has shown my son and our family. Thank you so much
When my 2 year old son first got started at JLD he was nonverbal and didnt seem to comprehend much language in general. We were concerned this could cause hardships in school and other ways. Since he started seeing Livia in June his language skills have exploded- now we cant get him to stop talking lol From the get-go he absolutely loved coming to his appointments with Livia He has a great time learning with her even after we moved away and had to continue via Zoom. Weve found Marcos and the admin staff in general to be very kind and helpful as well.
I highly recommend this center for occupational therapy but not speech therapy based in my experience. We are so grateful to have found Ms. Poonam as my 3-year-old sons occupational therapist After trying several therapists she has truly made a difference in his development. Her expertise warmth and dedication have helped him progress in ways we never thought possible. As a parent I have learned so much from her not only about supporting my sons needs but also about fostering a nurturing environment at home. Ms. Poonams approach is thoughtful and individualized and her patience and encouragement have built my sons confidence. We feel incredibly lucky to have her as part of his journey

Hi I just want to express my gratitude to Ms. Kavita for going beyond in helping my daughter Amari. Im amazed to see the progress in her self-regulation and skills. I cant quantify the efforts that youre contributing to my daughters well-being. Thank you also for all the helpful tips youre teaching me.- Sincerely Sandy
My daughter received speech therapy from JLD for just over 3 years and it was bittersweet when she graduated. Ms. Ping is the most kind and patient SLP Ive ever worked with personally and in my profession and she took the time to get to know my daughter and her interests. Even the front desk staff were always kind and helpful.
Frequently Asked Questions
Speech therapy is almost always recommended for autistic children since many people with autism have difficulty with social communication. Even if a child is very verbal and says a lot of words, they might need to work on communication skills like:
- responding to questions
- starting or ending conversation
- changing conversation topics
- using gestures like pointing
- understanding other people's body language
Speech therapy is a big focus in early intervention for autistic children and is usually the starting place for recently diagnosed kids. There is a critical period in the brain for language development and so, it's really important to teach language and communication skills as early as possible, especially if there are any delays in that area. Your child will learn effective ways to communicate which will help them grow into more independent and confident individuals.
It might be obvious when a child struggles with speaking —they are very quiet, say only a few words, or don't speak at all.
Spot speech and language delays like a doctor here.
The goal of speech therapy is to help your child communicate effectively with other people across all environments. This may take the form of using gestures, simple signs, verbal speech, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
Some other common things speech therapists can help with:
- Nonverbal skills, such as signs or gestures
- Forming speech in a clearer way
- Communicating thoughts and feelings clearly
- Understanding and responding to questions
- Discerning facial expressions and their corresponding emotions
- Noticing and understanding body language
- Feeding and swallowing
- Stuttering
The occupational therapy process includes an OT evaluation before care starts. Here are the four steps your family can expect when starting occupational therapy:
- Complete OT evaluation. An occupational therapist first identifies your child’s strengths and needs through a thorough OT evaluation, also known as an OT assessment or screening. You’ll answer questions about your child’s skills, and your child will most likely demonstrate their skills via hands-on activities with the therapist. Evaluations can last 30 minutes to a few hours.
- Approve OT plan. The therapist develops a care plan with individualized goals and customized interventions based on your child’s needs. You can also share any specific goals or concerns before approving the OT plan.
- Start therapy sessions. The therapist works directly with your child and your family, using various strategies and exercises to systematically improve areas of limitations and to build upon a child’s strengths. Some exercises your child might participate in are animal walks, obstacle courses, and therapy swing activities. Your family may learn strategies for supporting your child’s individualized needs at home, such as ways of supporting emotional regulation and sensory processing. The therapist may also recommend tools and techniques to use at home, in the community, or in the classroom to help your child succeed.
- Monitor your child’s progress. Parents and caregivers can expect ongoing progress monitoring and communication to ensure the child is achieving their short and long-term goals.
Occupational therapy can also be provided virtually via telemedicine. Virtual therapy is a great option for families in rural areas who may not have access to in-person services, or for families who prefer to have therapy in their child’s home.
Virtual OT allows the opportunity for increased caregiver participation and understanding of a child’s strengths, areas of improvement, and generalization of skills in the child’s home environment. Virtual therapy also provides increased opportunities for caregiver and family education to support the child and the family based on each family’s needs.
