Introduction
Hi, I’m Jessica Shafer, a pediatric speech-language pathologist serving children and families throughout the Lamorinda and Walnut Creek areas of Contra Costa County for 18 years.
I work with children ages 18 months to 10 years old, with an expertise in early intervention, speech and sound disorders, and helping gestalt language learners build meaningful communication. I believe speech therapy should feel less like “work” and more like play. My approach is child-led, strength-based, and rooted in the idea that children learn best when they feel comfortable, understood, and excited to be part of the learning process. As a parent of three teens, one of whom is neurodiverse, I view parents as partners in working together to best support their child's speech and communication.
What words would you use to describe yourself?
I chose these three words because I strive to create a comfortable, fun, and positive environment where a child can learn best. I believe being playful helps make learning engaging and enjoyable, while being empathetic allows me to understand and respond to each child’s feelings and needs.
I also recognize that not every session will be the same. By being flexible, I can adapt my approach to meet the child where they are, how they are feeling that day, and how they respond to the session material. This helps make our interactions more meaningful, engaging, and rewarding.
Who are you best positioned to serve?
I am best positioned to support young children and their families who are looking for a fun and engaging therapist that leverages the child's strengths to address their communication challenges. I also enjoy working with gestalt language learners individually and in small groups, providing a variety of models they can use to communicate in multiple ways.
