Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental speech difference caused by a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. It is linked to differences in brain activity related to speech and motor control. While stress or anxiety can impact stuttering, they do not cause it.

Consider asking them, "How can I best support you when you stutter?" General advice: You can support someone who stutters by being patient, listening attentively, and giving them time to speak without interrupting or finishing their sentences. Maintain natural eye contact and focus on what they’re saying—not how they’re saying it. It’s important to avoid giving simplistic advice like “slow down” or “take a deep breath,” as this can feel dismissive and may increase pressure. Creating a respectful, calm, and pressure-free environment (where you show that you’re not in a hurry) can help people who stutter feel more comfortable and confident when communicating.
