Parent Perspective

When I think of Gandhi, I smile. Every week, my 13 month old daughter has an OT session with her. Gandhi is patient, compassionate, intelligent, reliable and trustworthy. My daughter has made significant improvements during the time she has been under Gandhi's care. It is apparent that Gandhi is passionate about her career and clientele. I'm so grateful that we have Gandhi on our Team and look forward to continuing care with her. I highly recommend Gandhi. My husband, who is an Occupational Therapist for school aged children, is also impressed with her skill and ability to work with our baby girl!

The Story Behind Integrated Pediatric Therapy

As an occupational therapist since 2010, I’ve had the honor to work with many kids and families in schools, homes, and private practice. In that time, children and their families have taught me so much about what’s helpful — and what’s not.

Here’s what I’ve learned along the way about what doesn’t work.

✖️Therapy that doesn’t take into account the needs and preferences of the whole family.

For instance, it doesn’t make sense to work on eating with a fork if your family uses chopsticks.

✖️Therapy where parents aren’t actively involved.

Sessions should help parents understand and support their child(ren).

✖️Failing to connect skills or therapy sessions to problems in real life.

Life improves in the long term when sessions get connected to real life.

✖️Trying to change the core characteristics of a child.

Let’s focus on building mutual understanding and finding adaptations that honor each child’s preferences or personality.

That’s why In 2017, I launched Integrated Pediatric Therapy as a way to offer more of what’s most helpful to kids and their families.

What started as a small solo occupational therapy practice grew quickly as parents and fellow professionals saw the impact of my unique approach to providing therapy. Today, our team of occupational therapists comes together around the shared mission to provide our compassionate, practical approach to East Bay Area children and their families.

Founding Story

As a therapist and fellow mom, I know parenting a child with extra needs can be challenging. And no matter how big the challenges are, I see what’s possible for you and your child — and I’m here to help you see that possibility too. I’ve been a pediatric OT since 2010 and I founded Integrated Pediatric Therapy in 2017. Now I love mentoring my team while continuing to provide compassionate and thoughtful care that has been the foundation of IPT since day one. Drawing from my background in both home and school settings, I love coming up with big-picture solutions that connect the dots between home, life, and school without adding overwhelm. It gives me so much joy to help kids, moms, and all family members build skills, routines, and mutual understanding that change daily life for the whole family. Professional Highlights Benbow’s training in using the Neuro Kinesthetic approach to improve handwriting in children. Advanced certification in the treatment of sensory processing disorder from the University of Southern California. Advanced certification in administering the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT). Certified in treating children with feeding disorders and oral-motor problems. 9 years of experience in providing school evaluations including IEP and IEE. My Fun Side When I’m not wearing my OT hat, I enjoy reading fictions, gardening, hiking, cooking, and spending time with my husband and two little daughters.

Frequently Asked Questions

“Early Intervention” might be the provider’s way of describing services that they provide to babies or young children. However, it might also indicate that the provider is a vendor for your state’s publicly funded program. This means the services with this provider might be covered by your state!

The first step in accessing these free services from your state is to get an evaluation. The evaluation will help the state determine what services your child qualifies for, if any. You can find your state’s local EI program by clicking here.

When you contact your local center, say “I have concerns about my child’s development and I would like to have my child evaluated to find out if they are eligible for early intervention services.” They will ask screening questions and arrange for an evaluation, which is provided for free.

This happens. The results of the school’s evaluation may be different than your child’s medical diagnosis. It’s also important to remember that school is NOT the final say on your child’s potential. They may offer very little support to your child, underestimate their abilities, or disagree with you on what support your child needs. You will probably need to advocate for the services and support you believe your child needs.

The occupational therapy process includes an OT evaluation before care starts. Here are the four steps your family can expect when starting occupational therapy:

  1. Complete OT evaluation. An occupational therapist first identifies your strengths and needs through a thorough OT evaluation, also known as an OT assessment or screening. You’ll answer questions about you your skills, and you will most likely demonstrate these skills via hands-on activities with the therapist. Evaluations can last 30 minutes to a couple hours.
  2. Approve OT plan. The therapist develops a care plan with individualized goals and customized interventions based on your needs. You can also share any specific goals or concerns before approving the OT plan.
  3. Start therapy sessions. The therapist works directly with you, using various strategies and exercises to systematically improve areas of limitations and to build upon your strengths. If there are others part of your care team, the therapist may teach strategies for supporting your individualized needs at home and may recommend tools and techniques to use at home, in the community, or in the classroom to help you thrive.
  4. Monitor your progress. You can expect ongoing progress monitoring and communication to ensure you're achieving your short and long-term goals.

Even if a provider offers parent training, it may look different from one provider to another. For example, an in-home provider might conduct a parent training session directly following a therapy session with your child to help explain what they’ve been working on with your child. At larger organizations, you might have a support group of families who are dealing with similar issues.
