About High Road School of Anne Arundel County

Our school is a non-public facility that services Cecil County Public Schools. Our students have been primarily diagnosed with an emotional disability or autism-spectrum disability. However, we also have students with a wide-variety of disabilities. All of our students have some form of behavioral component that is required. The goal of our program is to return students to their home-school when possible. Otherwise, we work with students to achieve graduation through our school with a diploma from their local high school.

My son wasted 3 years here. He entered the school slightly below grade level. In 3rd grade he was being given kindergarten level coloring sheets instead of appropriate school work for his grade. I learned that for discipline the kids are placed in time out in a closet with a window for observation by staff. There is no gym in this schoola school full of students who often have strong needs to move and exercise. Now in 7th grade out of this institution he struggles in almost every subject. He is anxious and afraid that every time he makes a mistake that he will have to go back to High Road. In hindsight it would have been better to pull him out of school and homeschool him rather than allow him to be placed here.

This institution an appropriately chosen word should not be in the business of children. If you are a parent who is ok with your child being placed in seclusion -locked in a small room for whatever amount of time is deemed appropriate by their inept staff then perhaps this is the right school for your child. If you are a parent who doesnt see red flags when you are told you are not permitted to observe your child during instruction then perhaps this is the right school for your child. If you are a parent who does not want your child to be traumatized at school then RUN AWAY as fast as you can. There are many other choices out there.

I have never liked the school system of being on level and it needs to change. This system is not preparing the students for their transition to another school or everyday life. As for academics I feel that the students are not given work that is on their grade level. I feel if a student were to attend another school they would be behind the curve.
