Francine Testa, MD, is a pediatric neurologist who specializes in treating epilepsy. “I enjoy caring for my patients and working with them to control or minimize their seizures,” Dr. Testa says. “This gives them a chance to outgrow their epilepsy and possibly stop therapy when they are older.” She has extensive training in neurophysiology and performing electroencephalograms (EEG), a test that detects electrical activity in the brain. Dr. Testa says that epilepsy patients today have a range of treatment choices, including medication and neuromodulation (electrical stimulation). She offers surgical evaluation for patients with severe cases of the disorder. “I tell patients that many epilepsy syndromes can be controlled with the appropriate anti-seizure medication,” Dr. Testa says. “More than half of children with well-controlled seizures will have remission of epilepsy during childhood.” Her research interests involve the risks and predictors of fatal or uncontrollable childhood epilepsy.
