My son has been attending speech therapy here for almost a year. I attended a speech therapy session with my son after he hadnt been coming for about 3 months. This speech therapist he had today I wont include her name was absolutely horrible. She had no toys in the room for him to play with except a bin with about 6 cars. She barely spoke a word or encouraged play. When my son was getting frustrated because he was bored in which the therapist just looked at him and said nothing I had to suggest she get more toys. Like that should be common sense. She pulled her laptop out and asked if my 3 year old son wanted to play a game on her laptop. Ive attended many speech therapy appointments and have never seen someone give him a laptop to play a game. She was just staring at him 90 percent of the time not saying anything. He of course got bored and frustrated again so I finally asked how is staring at him encouraging play He left the room and ran into another one where I found him looking on the shelves for more toys and the speech therapist just sat in the room. She didnt bother getting up or saying anything. I told her were done because this was a waste of time. Hes had 3-4 different speech therapists hes had sessions with and this was by far the worst speech pathologist Ive ever seen. The quality of the speech therapist here is not good at all. Courtney was their best speech therapist and my son loved her but she unfortunately left. Their schedules are booked 90 days out so theres never any appointment. I will be cancelling my future appointments and looking elsewhere because this place isnt it.
What a gem you have in Physical Therapist Samantha Palicz at your Alexandria Virginia location. Shes been working with my 8 year old for several months. She suddenly stopped walking and doctors couldnt find a reason. It was eventually determined to be a pain syndrome not often seen in kids. Sam went above and beyond as we explored this together sending me resources communicating with me outside of office visits working with the doctors to get answers and even appointments where I was unsuccessful. She has taken regular time to adjust schedules to help her stay in school since she is seen so often. Sam also truly has a gift for teaching children. She really connects with my little girl who is so motivated to please her that she puts in great effort during therapy and outside of the clinic. I even have fun there She has my complete confidence.
Ivy Rehab offered great service to my son for speech physical and occupational therapy. He looked forward to going to his sessions every week and made a lot of progress during the time he was there. All the therapists were great The staff at the front desk were super helpful whenever an issue like billing came up and always helped to resolve the issue. Not to mention they were always welcoming and kind. I hate that we had to discontinue services as my son started kindergarten and his new schedule didnt align with his previously scheduled sessions. If we ever need to return in the future we will not hesitate to go back
My children and I love all the staff at the Alexandria location. The front desk staff is always so welcoming and appointments are very flexible. Im able to switch to an online session if needed. The therapists do a great job of empowering both myself and my children. If I have any concerns or questions on what to do at home its immediately addressed.
My son absolutely loves it Always excited to see his therapists. They all do all do a wonderful job My son has made such a big progress since being here. Clean space the ladies at the front desk are very nice and helpful Your able to schedule well in advance which is a plus I definitely recommend
The staff and therapists have been wonderful. Everyone has been friendly helpful and supportive. My child has enjoyed working with the therapists and looks forward to therapy. We appreciate being able to schedule in advance and the consistency that comes with that. We have seen a lot of growth over the last several months and look forward to continued improvement.
I started my child here about 6 months ago and the changes Ive seen are massive. The therapist are kind and make it an effort to make every child confortable during each therapy treatment. They make each therapy session like its playing time so the kids learn while they think they are playing. I recommended this location to all my close friends and family. They really improved the cognitive growth of my child.
My son has gone here for PT at Alexandria and Lorton and now ST and OT at Alexandria. I have nothing but great things to say about the therapists and the office staff. Everyone is extraordinarily caring and professional and has bent over backwards for my family. I have seen wonderful progress in my son and am so appreciative to his therapists for helping to facilitate this. Our speech therapist has helped with my sons IEP and stays in communication with his school SLP. They use evidence-based treatment therapies for his particular diagnosis. The front desk staff is incredible. The office manager has helped with problems we were having with our insurance and would call me daily with updates. Their treatment has been in keeping with the recommendations of my sons developmental pediatrician and I have never felt they have tried to overtreat him. My only complaint is their scheduling -- they wont hold a recurring time slot anymore so I have to call regularly to secure an appointment. Yes it is kind of annoying but I have gotten used to it.UPDATE They now offer recurring time slots Were still very pleased with IvyRehab
Dont waste your time with this place. They want to book out for a whole quarter in advance ok a running appointment isnt bad. The issue is no availability whatsoever My child hasnt had an appointment in 2 months and wont be seen again until end of JULY We have referrals for speech OT and PT but they havent had a physical therapist in a few months We knew the therapist was leaving because she herself told us the office didnt say a word until literally the day before her last day which happened to be our last appointment with her. The issues go on and on and talking to the joke of a the manager is a HUGE waste of time unless you enjoy getting empty promises and fake oh dear so sad so sorry. It took them over a year to get my child situated with a speech aid device the process normally doesnt take more than 4 months given they kept dropping the ball loosing the paperwork and just not doing anything with the paperwork once it was re-provided to them. Lastly most if the time they wont take your back on time usually 10 minutes or so after your slotted time and then end the appointment about 10 minutes early. Therefore you will never get the 1 hour or 30 minutes your appointment is suppose to be for BUT heaven forbid if you are late. They love to cancel appointments same day on you but if you do the same due to an emergency or whatever there is a 50 fee. This place is terrible and honestly not worth the time or effort to even mess with. I wish I could give them a HUGE 0 STARS.
If you can go somewhere else... DO IT My child was diagnosed with autism in October 2022 and I called billing and the center to let them know with referrals letters of medical necessity my insurance contract that was provided to me by my insurance etc. Its now one day away from April 2023 and I havent heard anything from them. Email after email ignored no response. And call after call just being told they will call back and nothing. Instead I read notes in my childs chart from his doctors office because my development doctors office reached out to help me get more appointments and to provide information about my childs diagnosis their response was that I was trying to get more visits with them. So basically at this point it feels like this place is calling me a liar with my childs diagnosis.Another thing I asked to be put on the wait list in October for occupational therapy and provided the referral and they still didnt get me on. When I asked a few weeks ago during an appointment I was told I was never added and they didnt have the referral. When they checked and looked back on email there was the OT referral. Avoid if you can
Im concerned about the review that said that they might recommend services that are not needed. But I think the office is accommodating and the therapist...
I had a terrible experience working for this company. The people in corporate could not care less about the employees. This company made cuts of CFYs...
Extremely poor customer service. Never returning calls. Failure in scheduling appointments. Look elsewhere if you want decent service. Is there any...
Frequently Asked Questions
Speech therapy is almost always recommended for autistic children since many people with autism have difficulty with social communication. Even if a child is very verbal and says a lot of words, they might need to work on communication skills like:
- responding to questions
- starting or ending conversation
- changing conversation topics
- using gestures like pointing
- understanding other people's body language
Speech therapy is a big focus in early intervention for autistic children and is usually the starting place for recently diagnosed kids. There is a critical period in the brain for language development and so, it's really important to teach language and communication skills as early as possible, especially if there are any delays in that area. Your child will learn effective ways to communicate which will help them grow into more independent and confident individuals.
It might be obvious when a child struggles with speaking —they are very quiet, say only a few words, or don't speak at all.
Spot speech and language delays like a doctor here.
The goal of speech therapy is to help your child communicate effectively with other people across all environments. This may take the form of using gestures, simple signs, verbal speech, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
Some other common things speech therapists can help with:
- Nonverbal skills, such as signs or gestures
- Forming speech in a clearer way
- Communicating thoughts and feelings clearly
- Understanding and responding to questions
- Discerning facial expressions and their corresponding emotions
- Noticing and understanding body language
- Feeding and swallowing
- Stuttering
“Early Intervention” might be the provider’s way of describing services that they provide to babies or young children. However, it might also indicate that the provider is a vendor for your state’s publicly funded program. This means the services with this provider might be covered by your state!
The first step in accessing these free services from your state is to get an evaluation. The evaluation will help the state determine what services your child qualifies for, if any. You can find your state’s local EI program by clicking here.
When you contact your local center, say “I have concerns about my child’s development and I would like to have my child evaluated to find out if they are eligible for early intervention services.” They will ask screening questions and arrange for an evaluation, which is provided for free.
The occupational therapy process includes an OT evaluation before care starts. Here are the four steps your family can expect when starting occupational therapy:
- Complete OT evaluation. An occupational therapist first identifies your child’s strengths and needs through a thorough OT evaluation, also known as an OT assessment or screening. You’ll answer questions about your child’s skills, and your child will most likely demonstrate their skills via hands-on activities with the therapist. Evaluations can last 30 minutes to a few hours.
- Approve OT plan. The therapist develops a care plan with individualized goals and customized interventions based on your child’s needs. You can also share any specific goals or concerns before approving the OT plan.
- Start therapy sessions. The therapist works directly with your child and your family, using various strategies and exercises to systematically improve areas of limitations and to build upon a child’s strengths. Some exercises your child might participate in are animal walks, obstacle courses, and therapy swing activities. Your family may learn strategies for supporting your child’s individualized needs at home, such as ways of supporting emotional regulation and sensory processing. The therapist may also recommend tools and techniques to use at home, in the community, or in the classroom to help your child succeed.
- Monitor your child’s progress. Parents and caregivers can expect ongoing progress monitoring and communication to ensure the child is achieving their short and long-term goals.
Occupational therapy can also be provided virtually via telemedicine. Virtual therapy is a great option for families in rural areas who may not have access to in-person services, or for families who prefer to have therapy in their child’s home.
Virtual OT allows the opportunity for increased caregiver participation and understanding of a child’s strengths, areas of improvement, and generalization of skills in the child’s home environment. Virtual therapy also provides increased opportunities for caregiver and family education to support the child and the family based on each family’s needs.
Once you find a quality physical therapist you want to work with, here are a few things you need to know:
- There will be an evaluation. First, you can expect an assessment to identify your child’s areas of strength and needs. A physical therapy evaluation usually lasts 30 minutes.
- You’ll review and approve the care plan. The physical therapist will create a care plan, also known as a plan of care (POC), outlining the goals and strategies. They will review this with you and your care team before moving forward with therapy sessions.
- Physical therapy sessions will be fun. PT with children is designed to be enjoyable. The therapist will use strategies and exercises based on your child’s needs. Exercises might involve playing on large stability balls, obstacle courses, movement equipment, stretches, and other hands-on activities.
- Expect home exercises. Physical therapists commonly assign exercises to work on at home. Doing these exercises with your child outside therapy sessions can improve your child’s overall progress.
Yes! Most providers offer physical therapy in their offices or a clinical setting, but many are offering at-home options. Virtual options have become more popular in recent years. You might facilitate care with the guidance of the physical therapist.
