The FirstSteps for Kids, Inc. (North Los Angeles / Ventura Counties) Difference

We Are Person-Centered and Always Compassionate

ABA is a scientific approach to learning with a focus on factors that motivate, reinforce, and maintain human behavior. FirstSteps adds heart to our science.

Your child is our priority, and we want them to have a say in their own learning. We will honor their opinions and celebrate that they have them. From what we teach to how, we will attend to your child's non-verbal and expressed preferences and will always ask, not tell.

We are person-centered in all we do; we design interventions that our kids enjoy and value. We want to show them easier ways to express their needs and wants, and to choose to try something new when their past behavior has caused them more trial than triumph.

We Contribute to the Behavior Analytic Community

Members of our leadership team regularly serve on the Board of Directors for state and national associations, are invited speakers at local, state, and national events, and present clinical research at conferences throughout the world. We are also an approved practicum site for many graduate school programs and provide supervision for our BCBA candidates. FirstSteps is also an approved Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) provider for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and a proud member of the Council of Autism Service Providers (CASP).

In addition, our Founder and our Director of Research, Drs. Harris and Tarbox, developed and established the graduate program for Applied Behavior Analysis at USC where Dr. Tarbox currently teaches and directs the program.

We Celebrate Diversity

We value diversity, equity, and inclusivity in all aspects of our treatment model, in our service delivery with our clients, in collaboration with families and communities, and in our organizational culture and practices with our staff.

We Live by an "Always Be Learning" Mentality

Unlike others, we don’t view training as a simple one-time experience for new hires. We are invested in our team, with ongoing learning opportunities provided throughout every year of employment and in every position. We know that your child’s treatment success depends on the expertise of our team and that drives us to continually innovate, share ideas, study the impact of our interventions, document those successes for the larger behavior analytic community, pursue advanced degrees, and even establish a new master’s degree program at a top ten university in the country. We don’t just hire for positions; We hire for careers. That is how expertise develops and infuses the high-quality intervention your child will receive at FirstSteps.

Founding Story

FirstSteps was established in 2005 by four women committed to truly supporting parents while providing the most fun and effective, empirically validated, behavior analytic treatment to children diagnosed with autism and related learning challenges. We provided ABA intervention from our one location in Hermosa Beach, focusing on the provision of compassionate, expert-driven client care and exceptional training for our clinical team. Soon, new families learned of us and we received requests to broaden our clinical reach by establishing new Learning Centers across the state.

Since 2005, we have grown substantially, always mindful of our mission to maintain a standard of excellence in all we do. We now provide compassionate ABA services to children living in both Northern and Southern California. Funding for our care is now readily available as FirstSteps is an "in network" provider for every major health plan, and a vendor for many Regional Centers who often cover copays and deductibles. FirstSteps also contracts with school districts as a certified Non-Public Agency with the California Department of Education and can provide school based 1:1 support when indicated via an IEP.

Frequently Asked Questions

We do! Every child’s program is unique, and designed with consideration of their individual strengths, needs, and goals.  An essential part of determining those needs and developing those goals is through an initial assessment. Our intake process includes:

  1. An initial phone discussion
  2. Your submission of any diagnostic reports and previous assessments, as well as our intake questionnaires
  3. Clinical observation and interview with you and your child, where we review your child’s history and probe current skills
  4. Observations of your child in their natural environment, including home and / or school / community
  5. Writing a detailed report with recommended goals and services to address your child’s unique needs, which is a requirement for all 3rd party funding sources
  6. 3rd party review of report and authorization for services. The entire process – from intake to authorization, generally takes 3-5 weeks.

If you’re interested in understanding the non-verbal experience, we recommend watching The Reason I Jump. If you’re looking for a movie that can help your child understand their emotions, many neurodiverse families love Inside Out. Check out our autism-friendly movie guide here.

For both a scientific and personal look at autism, we recommend reading But You Don’t Look Autistic At All by Bianca Toeps. Check out our full book guide for more great reads.

Hero Elementary is great for the young ones. Songs for Littles is excellent for toddlers learning how to talk. And Ranking of Kings is a great option for anime and fantasy fans. See our full list of the best TV shows about autism and inclusion.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy rooted in the science of learning and behavior. Using principles of ABA, children and adults can learn to improve their communication skills, social skills, and daily living skills while also addressing problematic or challenging behaviors. The primary goal of ABA therapy is to teach helpful skills that promote independence and reduce harmful behaviors. Here's our complete guide to everything you need to know about ABA therapy.

It's a big decision to make for your family! Applied behavior analysis (ABA) seeks to improve communication skills, introduce productive habits, and reduce harmful behaviors. Watch out for ABA providers who look to "cure" autism.

High quality ABA therapy does exist where the goal is not to “fix” children, make them appear “less autistic”, or change who they are. The goal is to help people learn all that they can so they can live to their potential while embracing their unique, individual personality traits. Here's our complete guide to start and end ABA therapy.

ABA is usually covered by insurance if you have an autism diagnosis. Autism is typically the only diagnosis insurance will authorize for ABA services since its benefits have been researched extensively.

Always check with your specific insurance plan to confirm that ABA is covered for your child’s diagnoses and that the provider you are seeking care at is in-network. Here's our complete guide to everything you need to know about ABA therapy.

Autism-friendly camps come in all shapes and sizes, making it easier for you to find the one that best suits your needs. An autism-friendly camp may come in the form of a day camp, meaning you drop your child off in the morning and pick them up later that afternoon, or as an overnight camp. The camp programs can range in length from a few days to a few weeks. The campers that attend autism-friendly camps may be autistic only or a mixture of neurotypical and neurodivergent kids. When it comes to support for your child, some camps offer 1:1 support while others have a higher camper-to-counselor ratio.
