About Camp Burnt Gin
Camp Burnt Gin is a summer camp for children, teens and young adults who have physical disabilities and chronic illnesses. The camp is operated by SC DHEC and is a program within the Division of Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life for children with special health care need by providing a camp experience designed to improve self-esteem, independence and the skills necessary to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Camp Burnt Gin was founded in 1945 by Emily Cate, a physical therapist with the Board of Health (now DHEC). Miss Cate believed that children with orthopedic conditions needed more than medical rehabilitation. They needed to have opportunities to develop independence, social skills and improve their self esteem and summer camp provided this opportunity. Originally there were two Camps, Mill Creek and Camp Burnt Gin. In the late 1970’s, the camps merged and Camp Burnt Gin was selected as the site because it was more accessible. Over the years, the program expanded and now serves children teens, and young adults with a variety of special health care needs. For 75 years, Camp Burnt Gin has made difference in the lives of its campers, their families and summer staff.
