My nonverbal son with severe autism began therapeutic riding at Beyond Limits about a year ago and its been an extremely positive experience for him. He has always had a love for horses and he did hippotherapy for five years when he was much younger. In hippotherapy riders dont control the horse instead the horse is led by a therapist and serves as the medium to provide motor and sensory input to a rider via its gait and natural movement.Therapeutic riding is horseback riding that has been adapted for those with disabilities and is similar to hippotherapy in that it also provides motor and sensory input to riders among other benefits but differs from hippotherapy in that the rider works to control the horse.I was initially uncertain if my son would be able or willing to control his horse because not doing so was ingrained from his hippotherapy experience. However with the use of adapted reins and the excellent teaching of his instructor Kingsley he was able to easily turn his horse in his very first session. He continues to use reins as if he had always done soI am extremely impressed with Kingsley despite being only a few years older than my son she is completely at ease with him and has such a natural sense of interaction with him despite the severity of his autism. I typically dont find people as young as Kingsley who are very comfortable with those as severely disabled as my son.My son loves coming to his riding sessions which calm him when he is having a difficult day and gives him the physical benefits of better balance coordination body strength and more. I also enjoy going to the beautiful farm where Beyond Limits Riding is located. My days in Autism Land are often frantic with paperwork insurance claim problems and more. Going to the farm is relaxing and calming break for me as well as I watch my son ride and enjoy the horses at the farm.I highly recommend Beyond Limits Therapeutic Riding and the kindest staff youll ever meet they are the best
