I have never felt more respected and better treated than I have here when it comes to medical care. Im being discharged tomorrow after being here 2.5 weeks after a terrifying motorcycle accident that very nearly claimed my life. No one made me feel overbearing when I know I talk and share too much. I want to shoutout a few who really stood out. Nurse Liz has a heart of gold and her art skills are on point. A couple times she went above and beyond to add beautifully created drawings to my cast on my arm when it had to be re-wrapped which everyone was quick to compliment. Nurse George kept me smiling and laughing with his humor and positive attitude. He shared some of his personal medical scares to remind me we come back and scary as this has been its temporary. Dr. Quang regularly checked in with me and clearly is great at what he does. He has a great attitude and proved he believed in me and my healing. OT Abby is driven to helping her patients and facilitating safe and successful healing. She thinks out of the box when the time calls for it to make sure she best suits her patients needs. PT Rolaun is dedicated to his patients and clearly knows the best ways to push them to safely and successfully meet their goals. Speech Therapist Tess has a big heart for her patients and provides steadfast assistance with helping patients with growth and restoring memory stability. These are just a few examples of the many great things just I have observed in the short time Ive been here. Too many great team members to list them all but this place is a high recommendation from me.

All of the Doctors and Nurses are amazing and the Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist are awesome. This is an excellent facility I spent 40 days recovering there from Guillain-Barr syndrome which essentially paralyzed me recoverable situation thank God. After medical treatment at St JosephsBarrows Institute I was delivered there on a gurney and was still unable to move my limbs. The Occupational and Physical Therapists spent a lot of time and attention pushing me and helping me push myself to start using my arms hands legs etc again. They have a wide selection of equipment including the Exoskeleton which helped me to walk again. They have compassionate nurses and nursing assistants that responded quickly both night and day. Also they serve good food with multiple options geared towards my needs after frequent consultations with the dietician.Lastly I cannot say enough about both doctors that met with me the most - Dr. Mahtre and Dr. Ota - they spent time listening and made sure I got the best care possible. With all disciplines there I noted that my questions and comments were considered and addressed even the small ones so they really did listen.Overall the compassion encouragement and positive attitudes from staff really create a healing environment. I did learn that you have to work to get better - they provide the outstanding environment staff and equipment to assist you but they cannot do it for you. Its a hand up not a hand out situation.

Im only 18 and the situation Im going thru has been very scary but this rehab made me feel so welcomed and safe. My PT Alex and my OT rebacca helped me get strength back and become independent and reach all of my goals. Down to simple easy human tasks to more difficult things I didnt think Id have to re learn they both helped so much physically and emotionally. I cried when leaving because of how much they mean to me and the impact they had. This place is amazing filled with all great staff Zachary was a PT who made my day fun and challenging while we played Wii together. Good food and good vibes Thank you for a good experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
Speech therapy is almost always recommended for autistic children since many people with autism have difficulty with social communication. Even if a child is very verbal and says a lot of words, they might need to work on communication skills like:
responding to questions
starting or ending conversation
changing conversation topics
using gestures like pointing
understanding other people's body language
Speech therapy is a big focus in early intervention for autistic children and is usually the starting place for recently diagnosed kids. There is a critical period in the brain for language development and so, it's really important to teach language and communication skills as early as possible, especially if there are any delays in that area. Your child will learn effective ways to communicate which will help them grow into more independent and confident individuals.
It might be obvious when a child struggles with speaking —they are very quiet, say only a few words, or don't speak at all.
Spot speech and language delays like a doctor here.
The goal of speech therapy is to help your child communicate effectively with other people across all environments. This may take the form of using gestures, simple signs, verbal speech, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
Some other common things speech therapists can help with:
Nonverbal skills, such as signs or gestures
Forming speech in a clearer way
Communicating thoughts and feelings clearly
Understanding and responding to questions
Discerning facial expressions and their corresponding emotions
Noticing and understanding body language
Feeding and swallowing
Stuttering
The occupational therapy process includes an OT evaluation before care starts. Here are the four steps your family can expect when starting occupational therapy:
Complete OT evaluation. An occupational therapist first identifies your child’s strengths and needs through a thorough OT evaluation, also known as an OT assessment or screening. You’ll answer questions about your child’s skills, and your child will most likely demonstrate their skills via hands-on activities with the therapist. Evaluations can last 30 minutes to a few hours.
Approve OT plan. The therapist develops a care plan with individualized goals and customized interventions based on your child’s needs. You can also share any specific goals or concerns before approving the OT plan.
Start therapy sessions. The therapist works directly with your child and your family, using various strategies and exercises to systematically improve areas of limitations and to build upon a child’s strengths. Some exercises your child might participate in are animal walks, obstacle courses, and therapy swing activities. Your family may learn strategies for supporting your child’s individualized needs at home, such as ways of supporting emotional regulation and sensory processing. The therapist may also recommend tools and techniques to use at home, in the community, or in the classroom to help your child succeed.
Monitor your child’s progress. Parents and caregivers can expect ongoing progress monitoring and communication to ensure the child is achieving their short and long-term goals.
Occupational therapy can also be provided virtually via telemedicine. Virtual therapy is a great option for families in rural areas who may not have access to in-person services, or for families who prefer to have therapy in their child’s home.
Virtual OT allows the opportunity for increased caregiver participation and understanding of a child’s strengths, areas of improvement, and generalization of skills in the child’s home environment. Virtual therapy also provides increased opportunities for caregiver and family education to support the child and the family based on each family’s needs.
