Disaster. This letter is in reference to the appointment that we had at your office on August 5th, 2022.
In this appointment, we saw Dr. Frausto at Banner Childrens Clinic on Ellsworth. There, Dr. Frausto took a urinary test to look for a UTI, at which time, she saw glucose in the urine. While the doctor was explaining her concern about the glucose the nurse did one finger prick reading, to which Dr. Frausto responded, “oh shit”. She then told me that my son was at a 310 reading and that meant he was a Type 1 diabetic. She left us sitting in the office for an hour while she contacted and consulted with an endocrinologist. This appointment was on a Friday and since the endocrinologist didn’t have any open appointments until Monday, Dr Frausto advised us of two options, one was to go get checked into The Children’s Hospital and the other was for me to start immediate insulin treatments for my son, James Bailey Michalski. I was opposed to going to the hospital so, she prescribed Insulin for me to pick up from the pharmacy with a suggestion that I schedule an appointment with the endocrinologist for early the next week. This was after ONE glucose reading, and when I questioned the validity of one test and asked my child what he had eaten that day Dr Frausto assured me that this was not a fluke and instead Type 1 diabetes.
Using my own judgment, and in conferring with my husband we did not administer the insulin, which surely would have shut down his pancreas and created a Type 1 diabetic if not a premature death. Instead, we chose to monitor his levels with a glucose monitor. In a full week of glucose testing we did not see his fasting glucose level go over 100. It turns out that my son had a UTI and had suffered a separated shoulder just minutes before entering the doctors office. (We had told Dr Frausto about the shoulder injury). Both the infection and the injury, and his consumption of gummy candies and brown sugar oatmeal, likely contributed to the higher-than-normal glucose reading. Additionally, we did get blood drawn immediately after this appointment, (at the lab in the same building) and the HbA1c for my son came back as normal.
All of this is to say, that the records for my son need to be updated and I will not be paying for the charges for this appointment.
To summarize, I went into the office to have my son see a doctor regarding a urinary tract infection, the doctor, after one high glucose reading, deemed my son as a Type 1 diabetic and instructed me to give him insulin. These instructions did not sit right with me, and we didn’t heed her advice. Since we didn’t follow her advice, we saved our son from irreversible harm.
We propose that the policies in your office need to be evaluated so that you do not run into a malpractice suit, additionally, my son’s records need to be updated to include that you misdiagnosed him and that he is not a Type 1 diabetic and the fees associated with this visit need to be waived.
Thank you,
Christine Michalski
Update: I spoke to the office manager, Krista, who said she couldn't do anything and would pass it on to upper-level management. I NEVER got a response to this email, I called multiple times and could not get anyone in management to call me back.
Update: After posting this review I was notified within hours that someone would call me the following Monday. It is Monday and I have been told that the "claim" I made has been escalated to risk management and denied. They stated that according to the chart we had a "proper course of action."
