Introduction

Hi, I'm Anna Wheatley! I'm a pediatric speech-language pathologist (M.S., CCC-SLP) and the founder of True Connections Speech Therapy here in San Diego. I'm passionate about helping children and young adults, from 15 months to 21 years, grow their communication skills in ways that feel natural, joyful, and meaningful.
I prioritize connection over compliance, and I believe the most powerful progress happens when children feel safe, understood, and celebrated for who they are. My sessions are child-led and play-based, and I honor every form of communication, whether that's words, gestures, signs, scripts, or an AAC device. Together, we build on each child's unique strengths to support communication, confidence, and connection in everyday life.
My areas of expertise include early intervention, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), childhood apraxia of speech and motor planning for speech, speech sound disorders, gestalt language processing, autism, and feeding. I'm Hanen certified and SOS Approach to Feeding certified, and I'm trained in DIR/Floortime, DTTC, and Ayres Sensory Integration.

What words would you use to describe yourself?

Energetic
Patient
thoughtful

Energetic, patient, and thoughtful. I bring a lot of energy to every session because children engage most when therapy feels like play, and my enthusiasm helps them feel excited to connect. Patience matters just as much. Every child moves at their own pace, and I'd rather build trust slowly than push before they're ready. Being thoughtful means noticing each child's interests, cues, and ways of communicating, then shaping every session around them and what their family needs. These qualities help children feel safe and understood, which is where real progress begins.

Who are you best positioned to serve?

I'm best positioned to serve young children and their families, especially toddlers in early intervention. I love working with late talkers, children just beginning to communicate, and kids who use or could benefit from AAC. I also have extensive experience working with childhood apraxia of speech, speech sound disorders, gestalt language processing, and feeding challenges, and I'm passionate about supporting children on the autism spectrum. I'm a great fit for families who want to be part of the process. I coach parents with simple strategies for everyday routines and collaborate with teachers and daycare providers, so progress carries beyond our sessions.

Anna has been our son's speech therapist for almost 18 months, and we couldn't be happier! With her support, he has exceeded milestones. She comes to every lesson ready to engage and work on a specific skill, uses great manipulatives she knows will resonate with him (so it's not a one-size-fits-all approach), and lets our other toddler join in and play! I have recommended Anna's services and will continue to do so!

I can’t say enough good things about Anna. As a fellow OT out in the field, I truly love collaborating with her. She is an incredible SLP knowledgeable, thoughtful, and so intentional in how she supports her clients and families. Anna has a natural way of connecting with kids while keeping sessions purposeful and effective. She communicates clearly, collaborates across disciplines, and always keeps the child’s best interest at the center of everything she does. As an OT, I’m so grateful to have an SLP like Anna to work alongside. She elevates the care we provide together, and I trust her completely. I adore her so much that we even run play groups together, in which I have learned so much from her! Highly, highly recommend her to any family or professional looking for an amazing speech therapist!

I can’t say enough good things about Anna—she’s incredibly knowledgeable, intuitive, and always generous with resources. As a clinician, she’s creative, patient, and communicates so well with parents, and it’s clear how much kids adore her by the way they light up when they see her.
