About Andrews Center Behavioral - Emory

The Andrews Center is a nonprofit community mental health and mental retardation center established by law as a local governmental entity in accordance with the provisions of the Texas Health and Safety Code, Title 7, Section 534, Subchapter A. The Center is named for Earl C. Andrews, one of the leading citizens of Tyler, Texas, who helped found the Center in 1966. June 4, 1968 the contract was signed with Smith County Commissioners Court which legally put the Center in place. Earl Andrews served 25 years, 20 as Chairman of the Board. The Center is governed by a nine-member board of community leaders appointed by the commissioners’ courts of the five counties it serves.

Friendly staff but the menu is too heavily automated. I was seeking mental health treatment but the menu told me to come in for a mental health screening. It was a waste of time and money. They couldnt even provide further treatment just told me I wasnt in a crisis. Pfft.

Ive been told they no longer offer counseling at least not for adults Im not sure about kids but my son is has been on the wait list for therapy for months and will be an adult soon so so much for that. But the case workers can be quite a help to be honest especially with a teenager or young adult. Theyve also recently started a peer supportgroup therapy group on Fridays at 1 pm for mental illness andor substance abuse recovery which is great especially for those who need therapy but dont like one on one therapy or prefer to listen more than talk. The people seem overall pretty nice and well-intentioned and sincere. I think its gretbthey wont prescribe benzodiazepines which are more addictive than alcohol. But the fact many people will not seek help there because their totally valid and legal ADHD medication will be taken away is a real shame and tells me one thing whoever runs the place and makes these decisions in their eyes poor and mentally ill folks are criminals who cant be trusted to take our needed prescribed amphetamines that help us function and feel healthy and normal. I guess they assume because we are poor we will sell them or something rather than take them. It reeks of classism. But you cant blame the people who dont make that decision. Helpful place overall but...well this country isnt nice to the poor or the mentally ill so its sad that this level of care is something Im supposed to be grateful for

There is this program with them that military veterans can get fast-tracked to get treatment. This is a great relief since the VA has such little resources in this area.
