My son has been getting services through tri county since he was around 18 months old. I had absolutely no issues with the previous company and therapists he had. We had to move so we switched to using amigo baby. I never anticipated so many issues. Firstly Ive had to switch speech therapists twice. One of the speech therapists would be kissing my son and gave unsolicited parenting advice that made me uncomfortable. When i called to switch I was told apparently she has had that complaint many times before so why is she still working there then Both of his current therapists are not consistent. Call outs at least once a week. Sometimes they offer make up sessions and a lot of the times ive had to ask them myself when can we make this up Weve had weeks of absolutely no services and then the next week it wouldnt be made up at all. Even make up sessions have been cancelled or rescheduled so its hard to keep track of how many sessions have not been made up but its definetly been 10 by now within the course of 7 months. Ive brought up the concerns with the therapist and was met with a condescending response. Also why was I given the busiest speech therapist when there are apparently plenty of speech therapists available Every single week his sessions are up in the air. Sometimes I get a text an hour before they plan to arrive sometimes no sessions for the week at all and Ill text Thursday to ask whats up when can you see him Per the contract that was signed my son is entitled to ALL sessions and make up sessions. To add to this i had a 10 min phone call last week with a therapist for an evaluation- my son was not involved or received any services and i got a note for an hour session to sign- i asked the therapist and she said writing the note took the rest of the time for a 10 min phone call It absolutely did not- i know they get paid per signing the notes so this feels like a fast one being pulled on me and feels very dishonest. Ive had therapists sign notes without my permission too. I was supposed to have a teletherapy session before and they never did it and i still got a note for a session which i obviously didnt sign because no one saw him . Therapists leave 15 minutes early every time to write their note. It feels like we are being shorted when we already are not even getting the bare minimum.I feel like I wasted so much precious time being with amigo baby. They have failed my son and I would not recommend them.
Amigo Baby is awesome my son is currently receiving service for Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy and I cannot say enough about how caring professional and genuinely interested in seeing my son thrive. I have never felt as supported by a company as I do with this one. They really care about kids as well as the families.
Christina Esparza from Amigo Baby has been the best thing to happen to my son Her kindness and love for her job truly shows in her interactions with my little boy
My son just did his last sessions this week and I am sad they are over. They helped my son in so many ways. He couldnt focus on anything and struggled to communicate his basic needs. Thanks to the amazing work from Andrea Diaz and Allison Watson Bakersfield my son has blossomed. His words have more than doubled and he now has ways to communicate as well as the ability to focus on activities he wouldnt before. They not only helped him but me as well and I will forever be thankful of them.
I dont have a good experience so far with the services being given or lack of for my son. 3 weeks ago he was rescheduled to another day and the next 2 weeks have been no show and no communication. I have left a voicemail and sent an email to the numbers and emails provided and it is so hard to get through the line. I have yet to receive answers and I see no reason as to why there is no one able to communicate with us. My son also receives early intervention services through another agency and have never had an issue with communicating or scheduling and have always stayed consistent.
I couldnt be more thankful for Andrea Diaz out of the Bakersfield area. She works with my twins and although we had concerns with other EIs Im beyond satisfied with Andreas work ethic and patience with both babies and our schedules parents and babysitters she is very professional and respectful. Andrea truly listens to concerns and makes changes as needed. Andrea is very communicative with parents and babysitter so we are all on the same page and working as a team to accomplish the childrens goals. I have seen so much growth in my daughters development and cant wait to see what great things she accomplished now having brother under her as well. Parents and caregivers please speak up when you are not happy with your EI not everyone works the same if you have needs and concerns to be addressed always let your team know Yesenia the field supervisor worked very well with us to accommodate in getting the correct EI for us that we felt comfortable with. I am beyond happy with our team.
My 2 year old never opens up quickly to new people but she felt so connected and comfortable with Connie Valles its truly amazing what she does. Shes not only helped my daughter bloom but shes giving me grateful advice to handles situations. I 100 recommend reaching out for them to help your children
Fantastic agency We get speech therapy for our kids though them and we have had such a great experience. They have been wonderful and kind
I love Amigo Baby The therapists are seriously amazing. Im so greatful to have caring people work with my son. They are so full of great knowledge and always going out of there way to help me with activities and speech activities.
The therapists actually are skilled but they will not work around your schedule. Sometimes they will show up late and come with an attitude and be rude. Also I did not like the fact that one particular therapist was straight up rude and asked why my gate outdoor door was closed even though I checked several times for her arrival before closing it. She show up late and I couldnt keep the door unlocked for the safety of my children. Very uncomfortable experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Speech therapy is almost always recommended for autistic children since many people with autism have difficulty with social communication. Even if a child is very verbal and says a lot of words, they might need to work on communication skills like:
- responding to questions
- starting or ending conversation
- changing conversation topics
- using gestures like pointing
- understanding other people's body language
Speech therapy is a big focus in early intervention for autistic children and is usually the starting place for recently diagnosed kids. There is a critical period in the brain for language development and so, it's really important to teach language and communication skills as early as possible, especially if there are any delays in that area. Your child will learn effective ways to communicate which will help them grow into more independent and confident individuals.
It might be obvious when a child struggles with speaking —they are very quiet, say only a few words, or don't speak at all.

The goal of speech therapy is to help your child communicate effectively with other people across all environments. This may take the form of using gestures, simple signs, verbal speech, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
Some other common things speech therapists can help with:
- Nonverbal skills, such as signs or gestures
- Forming speech in a clearer way
- Communicating thoughts and feelings clearly
- Understanding and responding to questions
- Discerning facial expressions and their corresponding emotions
- Noticing and understanding body language
- Feeding and swallowing
- Stuttering
“Early Intervention” might be the provider’s way of describing services that they provide to babies or young children. However, it might also indicate that the provider is a vendor for your state’s publicly funded program. This means the services with this provider might be covered by your state!
The first step in accessing these free services from your state is to get an evaluation. The evaluation will help the state determine what services your child qualifies for, if any. You can find your state’s local EI program by clicking here.
When you contact your local center, say “I have concerns about my child’s development and I would like to have my child evaluated to find out if they are eligible for early intervention services.” They will ask screening questions and arrange for an evaluation, which is provided for free.
The occupational therapy process includes an OT evaluation before care starts. Here are the four steps your family can expect when starting occupational therapy:
- Complete OT evaluation. An occupational therapist first identifies your child’s strengths and needs through a thorough OT evaluation, also known as an OT assessment or screening. You’ll answer questions about your child’s skills, and your child will most likely demonstrate their skills via hands-on activities with the therapist. Evaluations can last 30 minutes to a few hours.
- Approve OT plan. The therapist develops a care plan with individualized goals and customized interventions based on your child’s needs. You can also share any specific goals or concerns before approving the OT plan.
- Start therapy sessions. The therapist works directly with your child and your family, using various strategies and exercises to systematically improve areas of limitations and to build upon a child’s strengths. Some exercises your child might participate in are animal walks, obstacle courses, and therapy swing activities. Your family may learn strategies for supporting your child’s individualized needs at home, such as ways of supporting emotional regulation and sensory processing. The therapist may also recommend tools and techniques to use at home, in the community, or in the classroom to help your child succeed.
- Monitor your child’s progress. Parents and caregivers can expect ongoing progress monitoring and communication to ensure the child is achieving their short and long-term goals.
Occupational therapy can also be provided virtually via telemedicine. Virtual therapy is a great option for families in rural areas who may not have access to in-person services, or for families who prefer to have therapy in their child’s home.
Virtual OT allows the opportunity for increased caregiver participation and understanding of a child’s strengths, areas of improvement, and generalization of skills in the child’s home environment. Virtual therapy also provides increased opportunities for caregiver and family education to support the child and the family based on each family’s needs.
Once you find a quality physical therapist you want to work with, here are a few things you need to know:
- There will be an evaluation. First, you can expect an assessment to identify your child’s areas of strength and needs. A physical therapy evaluation usually lasts 30 minutes.
- You’ll review and approve the care plan. The physical therapist will create a care plan, also known as a plan of care (POC), outlining the goals and strategies. They will review this with you and your care team before moving forward with therapy sessions.
- Physical therapy sessions will be fun. PT with children is designed to be enjoyable. The therapist will use strategies and exercises based on your child’s needs. Exercises might involve playing on large stability balls, obstacle courses, movement equipment, stretches, and other hands-on activities.
- Expect home exercises. Physical therapists commonly assign exercises to work on at home. Doing these exercises with your child outside therapy sessions can improve your child’s overall progress.
Yes! Most providers offer physical therapy in their offices or a clinical setting, but many are offering at-home options. Virtual options have become more popular in recent years. You might facilitate care with the guidance of the physical therapist.
