Frequently Asked Questions
It’s fair to reassess your care team for your child, and there’s a chance your pediatrician may not be the best fit for your child.
To evaluate if they are a good fit, you might consider:
- Do they listen to me and seem like they understand my concerns?
- Do they feel like a partner in the process?
- Do I feel as though I can speak openly about my child (i.e., can I bring any and all questions to the table)?
- How well do they accommodate my child’s special needs?
- Are they knowledgeable about the unique issues my child may be facing?
A developmental pediatrician (sometimes referred to as a “developmental-behavioral pediatrician”) is a medical doctor that has received the same medical education as a typical pediatrician, with more specific training in developmental delays.
Developmental-behavioral pediatricians will have completed:
- Four years of medical school
- Three years of residency training in pediatrics
- Board certification in pediatrics
- Additional subspecialty training in developmental-behavioral pediatrics (typically 3 years)
Developmental pediatricians are certified through a process that involves a comprehensive examination process, administered by the American Board of Pediatrics.
