My son has been going to Kid Therapy for over a year and we are Happy with this learning center. The staff has always been so helpful and great at communicating any billing issues they also let me know with amply time if we arent able to have class.EstefaniaElsonand MaryAnn are so pleasant everytime we are there. My sons teacher is Dream MsGiselle has so much patience with Leonidas we are so happy to have her educate my son in sign language and help him to learn to speak. We highly recommend this learning center.
My son has been coming here for 4 years already for speech with Courtney OT with Tina.Estefania always keeps me up to date on any changes or and Aaron is always very welcoming
Great therapist My only negative comment would be the organizational skills of the front staff. They are friendly and will work with you. In the beginning we struggled to get the scheduling correct with them taking us off the waitlist and then putting us back on the waitlist. That said once we were established clients it has run more smoothly. The OT Liz is phenomenal and my son enjoys therapy so much he asked if he could go more and he is making steady progress.
Thank god my daughter only visited here once and NEVER again. Not only was the therapist terribly unprofessional but their staff made an error when submitting the claim to our insurance. Fast forward 6 months later I get a call from them saying I have a past due balance After many many phone calls back and forth between insurance and them we are still footed with the bill. Granted they did acknowledge part of their mistake and discounted my balance. I ended up just biting the bullet and paid it because I no longer want to deal with them. All in all avoid this place at all costs Absolutely terrible here.
will not return. we had our initial evaluation this past week. i had already completed all the online forms explaining why we were making the appointment...
We love this center. They love what they do and they all work hard to help us all out. Our therapist Bethany is simply a joy. Since day one shes had a...
The only reason Im giving 2 stars is that the therapist who evaluated my son was trying to be nice although she didnt introduce herself at the beginning of the appointment and did not evaluate us in a child appropriate room. I had to ask her to introduce herself. She did my one year olds evaluation in what looked like an adult gym room even though several kids room were open and available for our time slot as indicated by the schedules written on the white boards on the room doors. The office staff were not professional. They called me 3 days before because they didnt have my correct insurance number and during that call I confirmed the appointment time as 930am and asked if they would be emailing me medical history forms to complete before. The office staff said yes and sent me a login to the portal which never had any forms despite my logging several times before the appointment. When I arrived they shamed me by criticizing that I was late for my 915am appointment. In the middle my sons eval by the therapist the front desk woman MarianneMaria interrupted the therapy and shoved an ipad in my face and demanded I complete the history forms. The more professional thing to do would have been to wait until my sons evaluation was completed and then asked me to fill out the forms before we left the office. After the appointment Marianne accused me of not checking my email correctly and not seeing the medical forms. I explained that I had looked in all my email boxes including Junk folder but she didnt care. Luckily another staff member seemed to notice that Marianne was not being professional and offered to check online as sometimes their system does not work appropriately and emails dont get sent. From start to finish I didnt feel welcomed or valued as a customer. I was there seeking help for my son and yet I was treated as some incompetent moron. I have worked in health care for 21 years as an ER nurse and I would never treat patients or families like this. I have since found a private home visit therapist who is extremely professional and compassionate. I would rather spend my out of pocket money with her then use this company.
Theyve helped me so much in the past 9 months it used to be so hard for me to lift things and then I had the two most wonderful people help me.Thank you...
We absolutely love Kid Therapy My 3 year old son has been going twice a week for the last 3 months and has progressed so much. We love my sons therapist Joy so much. She has not only helped him learn to put words to what he wants and feels but she has also been teaching us what we can do at home to help him progress as well. Our family is so thankful for Kid Therapy.
Awesome office staff and therapists My son has been receiving therapy here for 6 months and within a week the ladies in the office knew him by name and always greet us with a smile. They also are very helpful whenever I need to call in to reschedule or when I am requesting documents. His speech therapist and occupational therapist go above and beyond to inform me on his progress and always answer any questions I have regarding the activities he does with them. The center is very clean and also very safe. I will continue to bring my son to kid therapy.
When you see a smile on your childs face and you hear him say Im exited to go to therapy that meanskids Therapy is doing aGREAT JOB Staring from the two young ladies in the front they are always so nice and polite Never have I seen a bad attitude towards any parent or child. And I am extremely happy with the two Therapists that my son has. My son has improved so much in so little time. Thank you Kidstherapy
My 2 year old loves her therapist and is always excited to work Anna Kay has been amazing for us. The front desk staff is friendly and helpful as is the billing staff. My daughter has made excellent progress with her speech and is better equipped to communicate her needs since we started therapy here. They miss five stars because the lobby is in need of updating often messy in the afternoons not comfortable when you have to wait during an appointment and because there have been issues when I wanted to pay an invoice but did not have the actual invoice with me their software wouldnt allow them to look it up. If I could Id give them 4.5-4.75 stars.
My daughter is very happy here she loves the therapists she has had 4 different in one year and all of them have been very helpful. The place is always clean and when some kid makes a mess they clean it right away. The staff is really nice. After been kiked out of several places for having a special noisy kid it feels nice that they make the effort to make you feel welcome and my child progress speaks for itWay to go KT
Frequently Asked Questions
Speech therapy is almost always recommended for autistic children since many people with autism have difficulty with social communication. Even if a child is very verbal and says a lot of words, they might need to work on communication skills like:
- responding to questions
- starting or ending conversation
- changing conversation topics
- using gestures like pointing
- understanding other people's body language
Speech therapy is a big focus in early intervention for autistic children and is usually the starting place for recently diagnosed kids. There is a critical period in the brain for language development and so, it's really important to teach language and communication skills as early as possible, especially if there are any delays in that area. Your child will learn effective ways to communicate which will help them grow into more independent and confident individuals.
It might be obvious when a child struggles with speaking —they are very quiet, say only a few words, or don't speak at all.
Spot speech and language delays like a doctor here.
The goal of speech therapy is to help your child communicate effectively with other people across all environments. This may take the form of using gestures, simple signs, verbal speech, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
Some other common things speech therapists can help with:
- Nonverbal skills, such as signs or gestures
- Forming speech in a clearer way
- Communicating thoughts and feelings clearly
- Understanding and responding to questions
- Discerning facial expressions and their corresponding emotions
- Noticing and understanding body language
- Feeding and swallowing
- Stuttering
The occupational therapy process includes an OT evaluation before care starts. Here are the four steps your family can expect when starting occupational therapy:
- Complete OT evaluation. An occupational therapist first identifies your child’s strengths and needs through a thorough OT evaluation, also known as an OT assessment or screening. You’ll answer questions about your child’s skills, and your child will most likely demonstrate their skills via hands-on activities with the therapist. Evaluations can last 30 minutes to a few hours.
- Approve OT plan. The therapist develops a care plan with individualized goals and customized interventions based on your child’s needs. You can also share any specific goals or concerns before approving the OT plan.
- Start therapy sessions. The therapist works directly with your child and your family, using various strategies and exercises to systematically improve areas of limitations and to build upon a child’s strengths. Some exercises your child might participate in are animal walks, obstacle courses, and therapy swing activities. Your family may learn strategies for supporting your child’s individualized needs at home, such as ways of supporting emotional regulation and sensory processing. The therapist may also recommend tools and techniques to use at home, in the community, or in the classroom to help your child succeed.
- Monitor your child’s progress. Parents and caregivers can expect ongoing progress monitoring and communication to ensure the child is achieving their short and long-term goals.
Occupational therapy can also be provided virtually via telemedicine. Virtual therapy is a great option for families in rural areas who may not have access to in-person services, or for families who prefer to have therapy in their child’s home.
Virtual OT allows the opportunity for increased caregiver participation and understanding of a child’s strengths, areas of improvement, and generalization of skills in the child’s home environment. Virtual therapy also provides increased opportunities for caregiver and family education to support the child and the family based on each family’s needs.
Once you find a quality physical therapist you want to work with, here are a few things you need to know:
- There will be an evaluation. First, you can expect an assessment to identify your child’s areas of strength and needs. A physical therapy evaluation usually lasts 30 minutes.
- You’ll review and approve the care plan. The physical therapist will create a care plan, also known as a plan of care (POC), outlining the goals and strategies. They will review this with you and your care team before moving forward with therapy sessions.
- Physical therapy sessions will be fun. PT with children is designed to be enjoyable. The therapist will use strategies and exercises based on your child’s needs. Exercises might involve playing on large stability balls, obstacle courses, movement equipment, stretches, and other hands-on activities.
- Expect home exercises. Physical therapists commonly assign exercises to work on at home. Doing these exercises with your child outside therapy sessions can improve your child’s overall progress.
Yes! Most providers offer physical therapy in their offices or a clinical setting, but many are offering at-home options. Virtual options have become more popular in recent years. You might facilitate care with the guidance of the physical therapist.
Pediatric physical therapy is considered safe and should not hurt. Autistic children spend their time in PT moving and exploring their environment. If you are concerned about your child experiencing pain during certain exercises, especially if they may struggle to communicate and advocate for modifications, speak with their physical therapist about your concerns.
