About Children of the Sea

Children of the Sea, or Keiki Kai in Hawaiian, was founded in the early eighties by owner, Lynne Zavrski. After years of experience within aquatics, Lynne decided to start her own school. In 1982, Lynne founded Keiki Kai, teaching private lessons in her backyard and then from 1982 to 1990, Lynne also taught swimming in city and county pools in and around Oah

Love the new facility Very clean and spacious The kids love the warm water which for some reason swim schools in Portland just cannot figure out what an asset that is. Only issues we have with children of the sea is the demand is really high and they baby the kids too much. The teaching philosophy is good but they need to be a little more aggressive on letting the child become more self sufficient. In Arizona we went to gold medal swim in Tempe and our then 2 year could jump off the sides into the water with street clothes and find the wall. They did not baby children due to the high number of drowning in Arizona. Children of the sea needs to realize that children are resilient and need to be pushed. Our then 3 year could swim independently and backstroke 25m. Our current 3 year is not remotely close to doing so here.

Both my boys have been going to children of the sea since they were babies. My oldest is set to graduate soon. Its a great swim school. Im glad that theyve been a part of my kids childhood growing up. We have great memories. If your looking for a swim school look no further.

Both my young childrens water confidence and swimming skills exploded after we switched to lessons from Children of the Sea.The class sizes are kept small so each teacher is able to give plenty of attention to their students which really makes a difference. As we have progressed through the classes we have worked with a number of different teachers and every one of them has been excellent. The building is family oriented and designed so getting kids in and out of their swim gear is simple. They also loaned me a spare towel on a week I had forgotten them.Their classes fill up quickly so if you have a child that is close to being ready to start get on the wait list early.

My kid has been going here for several years now and she absolutely loves the instructors. Shes gone from timid little girl to swimming like a fish and jumping into the pool with confidence.

Wonderful Swim School. 13 ratio. The teachers are amazing and constantly encourage the kids. Both my kids leant to swim there and had a wonderful experience. The waitline is longer I had to wait for a year to get in. But its totally worth the wait. I hope they will expand in future. Highly recommend them.

My 5-month-old and I loved our swim class with teacher Wendy. What I thought would be a fun bonding experience with my daughter was both that and a genuine introduction to water safety. I was impressed with how much they actually taught to a baby By the end my daughter knew to hold her breath under water and could kick and glide. Pretty amazing. Facilities a bit tight but theres a new location in the works.

We attended a two week summer camp program at Children of the Sea. Everything about the process was efficient well-explained professional and effective. My five-year-old daughter has struggled with swimming and confidence in the water and we have had no success with other local swim programs. She started the camp unwilling to put her face in the water and finished with loving going underwater and wanting to dive down to the bottom of the pool. More importantly she learned how to independently jump in the pool and turn around to get back to the side so I now feel confident that if she fell in a pool she could safely get herself back to the side. I have a peace of mind as a parent that she is safer in and around water and now she loves swimming and is begging to take more classes. We had a teacher named Erica who was phenomenal. Some people mentioned their facilities on here but I found them to be clean and that their small space was extremely well utilized and all of our needs were met. When we first came in we were greeted warmly and given a short tour and my daughter was allowed to observe some classes to help her be more comfortable. I dont usually write reviews but after seeing some of the negative ones on here I felt like I should share our experience. COTS is running a very well thought-out operation with attention to details and an effective curriculum

Instructors are fantastic. My daughter loves going. To address some other reviews I would wait until your child is old enough to really start learning to swim on their own to get your moneys worth like 4 or 5 yrs. Also we had two instructors with our course. The first wouldnt really let go of my daughter the second really challenged her and allowed her to learn how to actually swim without help. Some of the reviews I read here say the instructor carries them from one end of the pool to the other some say the instructor forces them to do things theyre not ready for. This all depends on the instructor and the child. So you have to take that with a grain of salt.

We started swim classes for our daughter here when she was around 16 months. I had heard great things about it and I would say that as far as the class...

We have been taking our daughter to weekly classes since she was 12 months old. Our son is now 1 year old and we are excited to sign him up as well. The baby-parent classes are so much fun and are a great bonding experience. My husband and I took turns every other week going in the water with our daughter. We plan to do the same with our son. Our daughter is now old enough to be in the water without us and she still loves her swim classes. If we drive by the school she gets really excited even if we are not heading to swimming. She says Thats my swimming school We also go to the baby open swim time on Sundays which is a good bonding experience for our entire family as our son goes in with us. We had our daughters second birthday party here and that was a ton of fun also. They even supplied the decorations and party bags. One important side note is that the water is also a nice temperature that is perfect for everyone including very small infants.
